Retailer Set 3DS Prices Roll In

Nintendo didn’t set a price for the 3DS, bizarrely, instead suggesting that it’s up to the retailers. That’s perhaps not entirely true, the retailers have to buy them in at a given price and they’re unlikely to drop below that, but it’s fair to say that already there’s a bit of a difference in who’s offering up which price.

Here’s a few:

ShopTo are saying £219.99.

It’s probably actually a canny move on Nintendo’s behalf, creating instant competition and hopefully some proper price wars as the customers eventually win out. We’ll see how it pans out.

  1. So more expensive than America, surprise surprise.

    • It’s the equivalent of £187 in the US, so at £195 its not much dearer. Especially as you can’t directly compare different country prices because you can buy different things for different amounts of money and average wages are different.

      • …and there’ll be sales tax to add to the yank-price. Don’t forget. We’re not doing too badly. It just smarts a little but there we go. Not the end of the world.

      • Way off I’m afraid $249.99 is the price I’m seeing reported as the US price. Add sales tax at say 8% (yup I know it will vary) takes it to around $269.99 which is about £157 according to Google… Is that 24% more that UK customers pay? Either way it does seem somewhat dearer.

      • I foolishly ignored our 20% VAT rate which means your bang on… Sorry! The US price in UK tax terms is $299… and there was me blaming Nintendo for UK tax policy… Shame on me!

  2. Competition is wonderful. Before too much longer it will probably have a game bundled with it to hold the price-point before the inevitable price-drop. I’d be surprised if I couldn’t pick one up later this year for £150ish

    • I’d be surprised.

    • That’s what I was thinking, especially near the holidays when Sony is supposedly going to launch the PSP2

    • Hmm. With the XL at around the £150 – £170 Mark. I can’t see the 3D dropping much below £200 for a while …

      • Although I agree there will be bundled games soon enough.

      • I think the XL will receive a big reduction when the 3DS hit’s shelves, Nintendo will most likely want to capitalise on those who want to upgrade but do not want the 3DS. I imagine game package bundles will be instantanious, they always are.

    • it will be a while till it gets to fair prices imo.

  3. Heavy … though not entirely unexpected. I still want one.

  4. more likely this is so they can claim the price is down to the retailer and not them.

  5. Of course the next question is how much are the games?

  6. Bit expensive, but not surprised really considering how much high places are still charging for the DS and DSi! Still probably going to sell bucket loads of them.

Also how long before the innevitable out of stock, create demand dilema Nintendo are known for!

  7. and knowing nintendo, if this is a success, they will stick at that price for years if sales keep going.

all i can say is i won’t be buying one at that price, if i have to wait years to get one cheaper, then that’s what i’ll do.

    • I think they will do a litte price drop when psp2 releases.

  8. Its up on Amazon now. 219.99

  9. The most suprising thing is that Game is most expensive….hold on, that isn’t suprising. All far too expensive in my opinion. You can buy a PS3 for cheaper, and even an Xbox with kinnect (just about).

  10. Oh, GAME most expensive. There’s a surprise…
I honestly don’t know what they are doing, they were selling DSi XL’s for £169.99 on it’s own in the run-up to Christmas and then offered no bundles with games. Joke.
