Sony Event Now a “PlayStation Meeting.”

The last time Sony held a “PlayStation Meeting” – a whole six years ago – the PS3 was announced. We’ve known for some time now that Sony are planning a big conference in its hometown of Tokyo on January 27th, but according to Japan-based site Andriasang the event is now being referred to as a long-forgotten “PlayStation Meeting.”

The event is set for just before Sony’s third quarter earnings announcement, with Analyst Yasuaki Fujima, who referenced the event as a PlayStation Meeting in a tweet earlier this week, also claiming that Sony are expected to turn the attention away from Nintendo’s 3DS and onto itself.

Sounds like a PSP2 reveal to us. Now that we’ve had a look at Nintendo’s latest handheld and taken it through its paces, what will it take for Sony to entice you to part with your hard-earned money when they finally release their next portable device?

  1. A price less that £250 would be a start…

    • That’ll be £249.99 to you sir :)

      • Well with the HUGE price tag of the 3DS maybe the PSP 2 will offer some competition to the market, unless the PS 2 comes out for like £300

      • 3D, statement confirming umd was a failure and a price lower than £220

      • Well if they are to compete the price should be lower but somehow I think it will be very similar.

Maybe one or two quid off but not much more than that.

    • why was UMD a failure?

  2. The PS sign on it is enough for me to seriously conside parting my cash for it

  3. On the agenda:

Item 1: Addressing regional differences and realising that not everyone wants the Japanese way of doing things.

Item 2: Book secretaries dressed up as school girls to serve our lunch like the last meeting. Must bring defibrillator this time.

  4. If they put a 3d screen on it, that is better than nintendos (read: works without beeing held completely still, and doesn’t give headaches) they have a winner. But what they absolutely need is:

    1. All the features of the psp
    2. Some form of physical media. Shops won’t push it unless they can expect to sell games for it later, this is a major reason the go crashed.
    3. Two nubs. Or the whining will be epic.
    4. Usb charging with a standard micro usb plug (like most cellphone manufacturers have agreed on)
    5. Bluetooth, for tethering like on the PSPgo
    6. Backwards compatibility for PSN purchases
    7. Decent battery life

And things that would be sweet:
    1. Optional UMD attachment, for old games.
    2. PS2 compatibility and lots of games released on PSN
    3. Replaceable battery for those long journeys.

    • Don’t think the battery will be replaceable but it would be nice, just hoping for a decent battery life.

I’m thinking that there will be some awesomesauce feature that no one has heard of yet built in, at least, im hoping there will be!

Also kinda has to be a price point of around the £200 mark?!

    • Really can’t wait for 27th now, it’s payday too so now have 2 reasons why I’m looking forward to 27th Jan now :D

      Wish list:

      3G
      2 analogue stick
PSN-PS3 games playable (Worms, Bomberman, Joe Danger etc)
      PSP1 games playable
      all PSP1 features
      Trophy support
      Lovefilm support
      Vidzone support
      Decent web brower
Games to come on memory cards
      £250-£300 tops

  5. GAMES!!

The one thing that has impressed me with the 3DS is the amount of excellent looking games it has lined up.

I have owned a PSP since launch, own 4 games and have played it for the grand total of about 12 hours.

    • That was the biggest stumbling point with the PSP, not enough AAA games.

      • It had the WipEout and God Of War games and …erm….

      • WipeOut Pure & Pulse, God of War COO and GOS, Burnout Legends and Dominator, Killzone Liberation, Little Big Planet, Silent Hill, Assassin’s Creed, Resistance Retribution, Gran Turismo, Grand Theft Auto, Ratchet & Clank, Jak & Daxter, Star Wars Battlefront series, Crisis Core, etc.
Plenty of AAA games, it was original IPs where the PSP struggled.

  6. I only started takiing my PSP seriously about 6 months ago when I bought it for my period of residence abroad. It’s a nice little machine that I love storing all of my PSone titles and some PSP titles on. I’m hoping for PSone, PSP and PS2 compatibility, with the none over inflated prices we are currently seeing, coupled with the rumoured ‘SD card’ physical media, a good repatoire of games and I’m in.

    • oh and dual nubs, gotta have that or the above is null and void.

  7. Would be an awesome way to reveal the PSP2, lets just hope it has all the stuff we want it to have, and a decent price.

  8. PSP2 can sit next to my PSP Slim :-D

  9. Whatever spec and tech details the new machine may have, the overwhelmingly vast majority of potential purchasers will always look at the price tag before anything else.

/That/ is what Sony need to focus on. In no way can this device be more expensive than the PS3.

  10. I can see the PSP2 trying to go head to head with Ifuckinganoyingthings. It looks shiny, smart and cool, all things Apple. The 3DS just looks like portable gimmick box.
