Mass Effect 2 Now Available to Download on PSN

There was much hoopla made about Mass Effect 2 getting a simultaneous digital release on the PSN and appearing on gaming stock shelves. Sure, you may have needed more space than Imelda Marcus’ wardrobe to fit it on your hard-drive, but it was an awesome achievement on behalf of the guys that run the PlayStation Stores nonetheless. Then, nothing. Where was it? The elusive monster download went completely AWOL, with little more than a “We’re looking into it” from the powers that be.

Well, crisis averted. It may not have made its lauded simultaneous release digitally, but Mass Effect 2 is now available to download from the Store.

You may need to delete some game data. Hannah Montana is looking good right about now.

  1. For anybody choosing the download option, it’s worth noting that you’ll probably also need the cerberus pack installed before you start the game. I didn’t know that was necessary with the bluray version so i’ve missed out on the comic.

  2. I wonder how many they will sell !

  3. Got mine from Shopto for about £35. If it was cheaper I would have considered going download but then again, I don’t think I would give up that much of my hard drive for one game – never mind downloading the thing on my $h*tty Orange broadband.

  4. You’re paying for convenience and a permanent digital copy of the game…

    • I know, but I’m also not paying for packaging and physical media.

    • That’s an awful lot to pay for convenience ;) Besides, I don’t know what your broadband speed is like, but if I got home after work tonight (say, 6pm-ish) and set my PS3 downloading ME2 and the DLC in all its 24gb glory, it wouldn’t be completed until tomorrow morning. I’ve ordered it today from ShopTo for £36 with free delivery, which I’ll probably get tomorrow lunchtime.

So, it’s not like it’s a great deal more convenient for the extra cost to buy it from the PSN.

    • Except there’s nothing very convenient about a 24GB download, PSN launch delays/problems and the ridiculous pricing. Alternatively, get it from an online retailer for 32-35 quid and have it turn up on your doorstep the day before release.

      Hmm.

      • The convenience is a permanent copy of the game, bought from your armchair, my internet connection can be 18 – 24Mbps. I still wouldn’t purchase ME2 from PS Store though, too expensive – i’m currently enjpoying the disc retail ME2….

      • 18 to 24 Mbps? Jee-hay-sus that’s quick. You must have one hell of a porn collection. I bet that’s so fast you can see what I’ve typed before I’ve even thought of it! Anyway. I don’t disagree that being able download direct to the console is handy, if you can do it quick enough (or overnight, in my case, lousy rural broadband), but that’s not worth £10.

That’s the problem I’ve got with this issue of the PSN version of ME2, it seems so cynically priced, as I understand it you’ve also got to pay £12 for the Cerberus pack that’s free on the blu ray version? Whoever’s pricing these things really isn’t winning any friends with consumers :D

Just as a side note, what’s the benefit of a permanent digital copy of a game? Doesn’t the blu ray version give you a permant, um, ‘real’ one?

  5. Uhh wasn’t there supposed to be a full game trial?

  6. Has anyone here actually bought the version on the PSN?

    • Some people must’ve…it’s been rated.

    • I’ve not heard if anyone here has bought the PSN version yet.

  7. £48 eh? I’d like to say I’m shocked.

  8. Really really want this game! Have the money to just go and buy it full whack, but im refusing to pay £40 for something xbox owners can pick up for a fiver. Im going to wait until i can get it for £20, at that point LBP2 will also be £20 and i can get both for £40. ah man, i should be in business ;).
Tha amount of games i got over xmas for more than half the rrp was mental, some games hadnt even been out longer than 2 months. KZ3 is the next game im paying full whack for. That should keep me going until this drops.

  9. £48!? This is now offically the most overpriced thing on the store. Come on EA, stop riping us off. I have onlu just got over the fact that DAA was £32 for over a year. I hereby brand the PSN version a failure due to it’s price. £48, what kind of sick creep would suggest that to be the price?>X(>

  10. I wonder what tool will actually fall for this, only a rich super fan who wants slightly better loading times due to all of the game data being on the HDD.
    Or a bioWare employee….?
