Shin Megami Tensei is considered one of the most prestigious JRPG franchises of all time, mainly thanks to the incredibly popular Persona series. One of the more recent SMT titles, Devil Survivor, was released on the Nintendo DS back in 2009, and though it received a warm critical reception, it was overlooked by Western gamers and didn’t even launch in the EU. Two years down the line and Atlus are re-working Devil Survivor for a 3DS re-release dubbed Overlocked, increasing its visual fidelity as well as adding full voice acting and a bonus chapter.
The game revolves around a group of friends who find themselves trapped when Tokyo is forced into quarantine due to a mysterious demon invasion. Though it does have some melodramatic staples and a cast of bizarrely dressed teens as the protagonists, when I played the original game back in 2009 the story and gameplay were compelling enough to keep me coming back for more.
Overlocked is due to release in the United States this summer, though there is no certainty that the game will launch in the UK or in neighbouring countries.

“… who find themselves trapped when Tokyo is forced into quarantine due to a mysterious demon invasion.”
Exact same thing happened to me when I was in Akihabara. No, wait – that was just the Softbank women dressed as French maids running about the place like crazed loons.

Man, you always have the most exciting things happening to you. The best thing that ever happened to me was a tiny lobster greeting me at the front door when I left for work.

I can top that: I ran into a giant turtle (it’s head was above my waist…) that escaped a nearby circus once after work… No women dressed as french maids though…

‘Tis true. I have led a varied and interesting life for which I am extremely grateful. And I haven’t even mentioned that time when I nearly got shot in Burma.

There was something like this on PS2….

Devil Summoner, by any chance? That’s an SMT game.
Devil Survivor was the first SMT I played, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. However when I crossed over to Persona, I really liked that too, but just didn’t have enough time to play all the way through, sadly.
