Sony is all about redesigning things, especially if it makes the object in question sleeker and/or more functional. They’ve done it to all of their major consoles, they just recently did it to the official PlayStation bluetooth headset and now it looks like they’re doing it to their first-party media remote for the PS3. Over on their Japanese site, Sony has detailed a new media remote that may take the place of the current model.
The new remote retains all of the functionality of the original but it adds the ability to sync it with multiple devices through an added IR emitter. If you have a Bravia TV, chances are you’ve already been using a similar function through ‘Bravia Sync’ but this remote will even allow you to pair it with non-Sony televisions.
We’re not yet sure when/if it will come to Europe or North America but it’s certainly not a stretch to imagine. The remote will be launching in Japan on March 31 for 3,600 yen. Check below for a pic of the seemingly Bravia themed remote.

I kinda prefered the other one that was shown in CES (I think).

I prefer the original to be honest, there’s too much going on in the middle, looks messy!

I’d love this to be programmable like the Lgitech universal remotes – via BT or USB port. Currently I’m using Logitech Harmony 555, but I’d ditch it if the new Sony remote would allow me to program itself in similar way.

I will buy this, as it actually has the volume button on. Depends on price though

I have the old design, and must say, I have used it about twice.
It makes just as much sense to use the pad to me.
As a universal remote it has it’s place, but, as with all universal options, if it doesn’t work perfectly, it wont work at all.

The Bravia sync function on my Bravia remote has made my PS3 Remote redundant TBH. So good to see it coming to other TV’s, if it could also “do” Sky too i’d buy it mind!

My amp remote is broken so this would appear to be ideal.

I love my current PS3 remote so I won’t be upgrading to this model, although the TV compatibility is tempting. I only have three remote controls though (TV, PS3, and PS3 sound bar) so it wouldn’t be worth it.
