Valor Mortis will now release in October, because September’s filled with GTA 6 dodgers

Lyrical Games and One More Level have announced a change of release date for their first person Napoleonic Soulslike, Valor Mortis. It will now launch on 13th October.

So yes, they’re now between the rock of GTA 6 and the hard place of all the games coming out in late September.

“September has become absolutely stacked with incredible looking games,” the team writes in the new release date announcement. “We knew this was a possibility, but when you’re in a Partner Showcase as we were, dates get locked weeks in advance.

“We want to give Valor Mortis (and your wallet) some room to breathe.”

Having to lock dates in with plenty advance notice has no doubt affected a lot of developers and studios, with what felt like the majority of games picking a release date between 24th September and 3rd October. And that was just from the State of Play, which was a few days before Summer Game Fest proper. I’m sure that a good few developers came out of last week’s announcement bonanza pondering a change in one direction or another. There’s four major melee-based action adventure games coming out within the space of a month, for example, but now that the marketing campaigns have begun for major publishers, it gets costly to change, and it’s not like getting closer to GTA 6 will be that appealing for most of them if they don’t have to.

Valor Mortis will have its own niche, though, the first person Soulslike, taking the Napoleonic War era and twisting it with the supernatural. You will be William, a fallen soldier rising from the dead to do as his beloved emperor demands – that Emperor Napoleon portrayed by Vincent Cassel. Luckily, since you’re a bit dead, you’ve got supernatural powers of your own and can turn them loose on the monsters, robots and people that seek to unravel Napoleon’s rule in a grand conspiracy.

You can actually try it out now, with a demo live on Steam. One More Level note that they’ve already patched this demo twice to address keenly felt issues, and having an extra fortnight development will give them that little bit more leeway to implement feedback before launch.
