Treyarch Talks About Black Ops ‘Bugs’

As if the gaming community hasn’t already beaten the Black Ops horse in to the ground, dropped a 5,000 pound anvil on it and repeatedly ran it over with a tractor before burning what was left of the body, we’re back again today with more conversation on the bugs that gamers have been complaining about. Specifically, bugs that may be in certain versions of the game but not others.

While speaking with Kotaku, Treyarch studio head Mark Lamia had many things to say about the time Treyarch put in to the game and the effort that went towards keeping it a bug-free experience.

“…we have a huge team that is just committed to making sure that Black Ops, period, on whatever platform it is out on, that people have a great experience. We have our own internal test team that are the largest we’ve ever had. We don’t even rely on Activision’s test teams. We have Activision’s test team support, but actually at Treyarch we’ve invested in testing to the point where we have full test teams testing all of these platforms and making sure we are doing all of this stuff.

We hear about something that bothers us and we make sure it’s fixed and addressed. Which is why you’ve seen aggressively us addressing things we hear about. So when we hear about something, we actually reach out to players sometimes in the community to see if we can replicate it. If there is something out there that we’ve never seen, obviously we’re going to work with players to see if we can work it out.”

Mark went on to say that the cases of bugs on the PS3 version of the game are largely overblown and only affect a very small minority of the community.

“Here is what I will say: We know this for a fact, that the vast, vast majority don’t have these sorts of experiences and they’re out there playing this game. To the extent that there are issues we are unaware of, we are committed to trying to work to make sure the experience is good, that’s the most important thing. We are making the game for everyone. The game is robust, huge, we want to make sure if there are any issues they are addressed. That’s not to say there aren’t edge cases. When we do hear of something, we’re not like not doing anything.

I would ask you to go on to the PS3 yourself, not just read the boards, and experience it yourself on both platforms.”

I’ve actually done exactly what Mark Lamia has asked. I’ve put a hefty amount of time in to both the Xbox and PS3 versions of the game and aside from some frame rate dips, they’re very close to being identical. During my time with the PS3 version, I did not experience a single circumstance that I would say stemmed from a ‘bug’.

With that said, I’m only one person and I’m sure there a fair amount of people that had the opposite experience.

  1. I didn’t have any problems with the offline single player stuff, zombies was fine but I always seem to get lag online, but that is done to the fact its not on servers and the host has an advantage.

  2. Upon loading the game for the very first time, it jumped during the flashy Treyarch/Activision intro. Drops in framerate during the single player & some dumb AI parts. Only played the campaign once, but it’s 4 months later & the multiplayer is still suffering. MW2 is unbalanced, but the game ran a LOT better. Treyarch is the B team, or should I say the D team?! Activisions got 3 other developers working on CoD now don’t they? Anyway it’s unlikely Black Ops will ever run the way it’s supposed to.

  3. The connection issues are a lot better since the last patch. Before the patch you were lucky if u got 2 games in a row without getting disconnected. I’ve actually played it a lot over the last couple of weeks.

I’m beginning to get a bit pissed off lately though with the spawn system for one thing. There also still seems to be a delay with your bullets actually hitting someone. I’ve lost count of the amount of times I’ve been shooting someone from behind, only for them to have the time to turn around and kill me. I know I’m not the only person to have experienced this and MW2 defintely did seem to run a lot smoother on PS3.

Anyway, I’m not just bitching about CoD as its the “in” thing to do lately. I’ve played Black Ops more than any other game over the last couple of weeks. It just can be very frustrating sometimes.

  4. Barely played this lately, think I’ve been on it once this year.
Lasr time I did it was a mess and even made my PS3 freeze and have to do a hard reset.

I’m sure these problems will have been sorted now though.

  5. “we’re not like not doing anything”
If he didn’t pull a Bill & Ted pose when saying this I want him killed.

    • All that was missing was the “dude” from the end! :)

  6. Mw2 was amazing, and Blops had a lot to live up to, but it failed miserably. Doubt I’ll be buying a Treyarch game again. IW + Respawn from now on.

  7. I have a fantastic Black Ops bug. I haven’t delved further in to it and done any further testing but here is the scenario:

I was playing demolition using my main account and my son was a guest. Class 3 was my sniper class (Sniper Rifle PSG1) so I picked that and my son went with the AK74u. So on Firing Range I went in to the hut near Bomb A (I think) and climbed on the table to scope across the field to the other side and as I pressed L1 all I could see in the scope was what was happening on my son’s portion of the screen. I.e. when I scope via L1, I can see my son’s First Person view running about shooting people.

I don’t know if this can be fed back?

  8. since one update, on hittig d-pad to ready flamethrower, you used to be able to deactivate by pressing again. now you have to ready pistol, then switch back to primary weapon.
everytime i select pistol, it visually pulls out the pistol twice.
hitmaker big delay at host end, as was demonstrted on a prev vid here.

that all said, i just doesnt play right (imo), cant put my finger on what it is.
its not the graphics or sound, as w@w was almost identical but played much better.

  9. The “bug” (if thats what it is) that bothers me is the offline split screen not working

When they added the bots it disabled the split screen mode (offline) which has an impact on me because the time i spend on my ps3 80%, is offline

and treyarc have never even acknowleged this. in public anyway (and not that i have seen)

  10. Connection issues… that would be my biggest complaint. BLOPS certainly emphasizes the major differences between server-based and host-based multiplayer games. The connection issues were pretty annoying… losing squad mates from games, and having to back out of games in order to pickup them back up in your party. I am really looking forward to BF3 and Homefront… both server-based games.
