Amazon have stated that the Nintendo 3DS has become their most pre-ordered console ever. The upcoming handheld has beaten the PlayStation 3’s pre-order numbers by twenty percent and looms large over Nintendo stablemate, the Wii by fifty-six percent.
Chris Poad, Director of Video Games at Amazon UK said:
It’s unusual for a handheld console to attract this amount of excitement in the run up to launch, such high levels of interest are normally reserved for the play-at-home hardware like the ground-breaking Nintendo Wii and last year’s Microsoft Kinect, Nintendo 3DS is launching at a time when interest in all things 3D is incredibly high and with the promise of real 3D graphics without glasses, it’s a real breakthrough in handheld video game entertainment
With just over a week still to go until launch, and pre-orders still being taken, it is reasonable to assume that the figure will increase. Of course, online purchasing is much more commonplace today than it was for the PlayStation 3’s UK launch back in 2007 and even more so than it was in 2006 when the Wii famously sold out everywhere.
That said, the 3DS is being ordered significantly more than Kinect or Move so perhaps that’s some indication of just how popular the device will be.

I have heard that staff at several game stores have been preordering mutliple amounts of 3DS just for them. We all knew this was going to happen as Ninty owns the causal market. Question is how long will they play it for? I personally don’t like 3D as it is a gimmick and is waint to be milked dry. But if there any any impressive games at launch or over the next few months then i may consider getting it. i wonder when TSA will review the 3dS? If TSA reviews consoles?
