Hacktavists Target Sony Employees

A splinter group from ‘Anonymous’, known as ‘Sony Recon’ are trying to discover information on Sony employees. The group is gathering the personal information of ‘useful targets’ including Robert S. Wiesenthal, a group executive at Sony Corp as well as the Judge and legal team in the current Geohot case.

Sony Recon founder ‘Randomtask’ apparently posted ‘Sony, the judge and Sony’s lawyers are all valid targets.’

The group PlayStation LifeStyle are suggesting numerous uses for the information including creating personal adverts for ‘erotic services’ on Craigslist and spamming the addresses with hundreds of free UPS boxes. They also suggest the following:

STD Postcards – send one of these e-postcards notifying the target that one of their previous sexual partners has a STD. Makes for an uncomfortable wait for them. Alternatively call an AIDS hotline and ask them to anonymously tell the target they could have HIV, that’s a 6 month wait until the test comes back.

Since the postings on the Sony Recon channel went public, PS3 Hacker ‘Kakarotoks’ has tweeted:

No attacks on people and no plans to, ONLY *recon*, gathering information that is already publicly available, in the hopes of finding something incriminating to help in the lawsuit. Anonymous is against violence or threatening/attacking people.

He says nothing illegal is being done, and news sites are reporting the information wrong.

Hopefully he is correct and Sony Recon will back down.

Update: After further research into this it seems we need to point out a little more strongly that the comment concerning “Stringer’s kids” was an isolated comment and has not been endorsed by any of the leadership of either Anonymous or SonyRecon (such that they are). The headline and content has been altered to reflect this.

  1. OMG, I hope that part about targeting Sony employees’ children was only a sick joke by one of their members! Anyway, these guys seem to be as reasonable as your average fanatic, and sadly also sadists who would like to see Sony employees suffer for 6 months by implying that they’re seriously ill. Disgusting.

  2. It’s not like Sony doesn’t target children. While I wish no physical harm upon anybody… especially children… Sony targets an underage market. You’re fooling yourself if you think Sony cares about the age limits set by the ESRB and such. And since Sony spys on you through the PS3, they collect information on every minor who uses a PS3. And then they sell it to whomever they want. But since they’re a corporation that uses that information to make money it’s considered legitimate. Sony wants more power then their legally permitted, they obtain that power through deceptive legal terms and by tricking people into volunteering their legal rights to Sony corporate law, many of wich are minors whom have no legal understanding of their rights. While I still say theres better ways to make a point then this, anonymous gathering public information is hardly a crime. Only a hypocrite would support companies collecting “public information” and cry fowl when an individual or group does it.

    • Great points there; turnabout is fair play, after all. That said, personal attacks are not the way to go – if no-one takes the higher ground, we all end up stuck in the mire.

    • Sony doesnt send cards saying “You have HIV” to kids, which is what these c*nts seem to have in mind. Collecting information is fine, using it to upset people is not.

      • your combining two quotes. Have anonymous said they were targeting children for attacks, no, only that they’re looking for information. In all likelihood they’re looking to see if any kids of sony executives are running CFW or pirate sofware/music, ect. How embarrassing would it be for Sony if the people involved in this had children who pirate or have modded PS3 PSP or even a 3DS. I don’t support cyber-bullying, regardless if its a person or company, but public information is public, and I’d love to see a virtual money trail of political contributions made to californian politicians and judges on Sonys behalf since that seems to be the only place Sony wants to fight. I hope that some nut-job doesn’t target anybodies child for retaliation regardless of the crimes of their parents. We also don’t know the ages of said children. Children doesnt have an age limit, you can be 50 and still be somebody child. These children could very well be over 18.

  3. Also
“Other Dox attacks highlighted by the group could include:”
isn’t the first quote actually from PSLS instead of the group anonymous that highlights what anybody could do with information of this caliber.

    • Every article I search for on this list Playstation lifestyles as a sourch of the what might the information be used for quotes. And surprising PSLS doesnt list their sorce for these quotes. It’s begging to apper that PSLS suggested that these are actions that could be committed, but worded it in a way that leads people to believe that OpSony, Sony recon, or anonymous is responsible for the quote and that these are the ideas and intentions of those groups. The only official response from Sony recon I can find is the second quote that comes from twitter.
“The group are suggesting numerous uses for the information including” do you have a link that proves that Sony recon said these are their suggestions, I’m not saying your lying, but as I said I can’t find anything that doesnt list Playstation lifestyles as the source of these quotes. And the second twitter quote is a direct contradiction to the first from PSLS. Just seems like half of this story is made up buy PSLS.
