Possible SCEE Source Cites Reason For PSN Outage

In the wee hours of this morning a tipster contacted TSA, as well as PSU, with information as to why the PSN has been down for the last few days. Obviously we can’t validate the accuracy of this source, although screen grabs were provided showing his private conversation, apparently with a SCEE employee that he claims to have a close connection with.

This conversation yielded potentially new information, with the tipster stating that there was a “sustained LOIC attack on the PSN Store” and “a concentrated attack on PS servers holding account info”. We’re told that Admin Dev accounts were breached and the PSN was shut down by Sony, who are now in the process of restoring backups to new servers.

We’ve seen equally unsupported claims elsewhere that personal details, passwords and log history were breached, as well as the encrypted files storing credit card info. Apparently those card details are still secure because of the way they are encrypted but users’ personal info might have been attained during the attack. Obviously this is not confirmed and is based on hearsay but if true it is quite worrying.

Obviously this is all based on the claims of a source whose identity is unclear. As such, we’d advise you to be cautious about the validity. If true though, it could have very serious ramifications.

We would advise against anyone panicking based on these vague claims but there is some cause for concern and we would urge SCE to help set people’s minds at rest by making a more detailed official statement which either confirms or clearly denies the loss of data.

  1. Some guys expect Sony to send each and every one of us our very own PlayStation worker to our front doors all wrapped up with a bow on top so they can hold our hands whilst we weep endlessly over out networkless PS3s.

  2. I don’t understand why Sony ‘neither confirm or deny’ any claims made.
I just want to know why? Is that really asking to much?

    • YES!
Sony never responds to rumors and neither does microsoft or nintendo i assume…

      • but this isn’t a rumor we all know PSN’s been hacked abit more info on how much longer PSN is gonna be down for is all that’s needed to say to their customers and if peoples credit/debit card details are safe anymore stored on their servers they owe that to their customers, shareholders and developers especially 3rd party devs

  3. Disconcerting. Oh well, nothing I can do about it. Time for dinner (or lunch, whatever).

  4. Still wondering whats the problem as this isnt a official statement.

    • The problem is an external breach into the PSN…

  5. The key issue here is communication, not 0-day resolution or the childish demands for compensation. I am 100% certain that Sony is doing everything possible to solve the matters and 100% confident that they are really working 24/7, but they really need to get their communications department in gear… Speculation is winding up.

    • Sony dont have a communications department as they dont know what communicating is

  6. Don’t get me wrong here. I’m DISGUSTED that Sony has not told us anything even when we ask for answers to a potentially frightening prospect. I may very well buy an Xbox over the NGP.

    • LMAO, the NGP is miles better thsn the Xbox and it’s Portable too! xD

      • Whoopee dooo daaa

      • Yeh but come on. Xbox has secure servers yes? I’m fine with waiting, in fact it’s given the perfect oppurtunity to meet up with mates. But when serious stuff like this goes down, then it gets very frustrating.

      • You obviously forget the downtime in Feb ’10, or June ’09, or Jan ’08, or Xmas ’07…

    • you act like xbox live has never had it’s problems? Although it doesn’t really matter about the xbox live as were talking about psn! It’s kinda strange just hving to play old SP campaigns I havn’t ever got around to playing , kinda glad! Just wanna get my trophies synched and online! Lol

  7. Let’s hope it’s all resolved soon and there are no ‘casualties’.
When OtherOs was removed, i went without PSN for a month in protest but to help dispel the feeling of being an ‘outcast’ i joined the TSA folding@home team and have been folding ever since!

  8. Now i am p*ssed off at whoever hacked it,(if true). I just realised something, what if recent purchases on the PS store are deleted from your account?*Shudders*

    • ….there will be blood.

      • i hope not as the media doesn’t need more ammunition against gaming.:P

  9. As long as my account is safe and in full working order (incl. trophies) I’ll be happy.

    • Surely trophies won’t be affected as they are all saved on your PS3 anyway, you could just reupload them? I’m more concerned about my personal and bank details.

      • Hm, i thought the trophies are uploaded to the Sony PSN servers? anyone?

  10. Hope psn is back up soon. Reinforcing the servers better be worth it!
