By 0320 GMT today, Sony shares were down 4.8 percent, in a broader market up 1.3 percent, whilst Larry Ponemon, chairman and founder of network security group The Ponemon Institute (that’s Ponemon) has suggested that the hackers may cost Sony up to $20 for every single PSN user – $1.5 billion in total.
Theses costs are not just from lack of business, they also include bringing in security experts to secure the system, notifying customers and running a massive PR campaign to repair the damage to the brand.
Sony has seen its share value plummet almost 8% in total this week as investors monitor the fall out from the network intrusion.
If you thought Sony were being lackadaisical about the data loss then consider this: any company that loses 8% of its value in seven days will be doing everything possible to stop their market value from dropping even further.
They are going to have to ensure this never happens again which is good news for us, it may be take a while but when the PSN comes back it will be like Fort Knox. Never mind what we think, Sony shareholders will not settle for anything less.
Some people have been suggesting that the hacker will manage to evade prosecution for his/her crimes but if I had a $1.5 billion bounty on my head then I’d be changing my trousers every hour, Sony simply cannot afford for this person to slip away.

I think Sony are in a bit of a stalemate at the moment. I believe this last attack on them was down to their handling of the Geohot case (many hackers were vocal about how Sony were breaking the law…I’m not clued up enough to have an opinion on that) and was launched as a massive ‘F*ck with us and we’ll f*ck you up’, and it’s worked. Problem is now if Sony decide to track down and punish the hackers that did this they could open up an entirely new, more long term and potentially much more damaging packet of pain onto Sony in retaliation.
squashme
i doubt that very much if they catch this twat it will teach every hacker a valuable lesson dont mess with a big international corporation like Sony
GTRsannin
I hope this doesn’t end up Sony closing SCE completely that would be allot of jobs and i would hate it because i like PlayStation
squashme
not to mention the loyal 1st party devs

As someone who is on the market for a new console and pretty soon, I can see how this would be rather damaging to Sony’s rep. To be honest, I want both a 360 and a PS3 but my desire of which one to purchase first has sorta been pushed.
TURRICAN-808
I wonder how many years it will take SONY to recover from those predicted losses?
skibadee
just hope they stay alive E3 soon as well bad times.
squashme
after the Japan earthquake this is not what Sony needs
grimm
A good buying opportunity for Sony shares then if anyone fancies a punt ;)
Kovacs
Already punted.

Sony’s reputation might be damaged in the eyes of the casual not-so-well-informed crowd but I’m still going to enjoy the hell out of my PS3. I have learned my lesson as far as the information I put into the PSN goes but it won’t stop me from enjoying the PS3 and PSN in the future. Sony will only have a fake address of me and I’ll use PSN cards for future purchases.
Bilbo_bobbins
thats what I am now going to do.
skibadee
will be doing the same as well.
Bilbo_bobbins
Time for me to invest then. Thanks for the help TSA :)

I’d wait till a few EU investigations are announced (you know how the EU loves to fine companies) and then… yeah, I’d buy.
squashme
oooh if the EU Commission fine Sony it could have big ramifications for them as it wont be for a half a million like the ICO
squashme
you say massive PR campaign I havent seen any pr campaign

This PSN hack has just further proved that Xbox Live may actually be worth paying for.
Either way my money for things like TV’s go to Panasonic but I will keep on buying Playstation’s. I’ll but PS4 for single player and the 3rd Xbox for online in 2015.
I have lost total trust in the PSN and Sony’s poor software coding.
Sympozium
Well that had a outage years ago maybe it was 2, maybe a hack or it was just problems with the servers. I’ll just use each gaming service depending if it works well

Is that how you spell lacksadaisical, you may be right but its the first time in nearly 30 years of life ive ever seen it written down and its not spelt how i thought it would have been. ;-)
BrendanCalls
P.S. It is now going to be wrod of the week that i use as much as possible.

lackadaisical
thats the proper spelling from Firefox’s built in dictionary
cc_star
lol, I’ve never seen it written either
Kovacs
It’s “lackadaisical”, a variant of lackaday which, itself, is an alternate of alack, as in “alack the day”. Alack is an old exclamation of regret.
I’m here all week.
squashme
you are my personal dictionary from now on :P
BrendanCalls
Love it,
lackadaisical…lackadaisical…lackadaisical
Sympozium
