Uncharted 3 Designer On 3D: We’re Making Awesome Stuff

Uncharted 3 represents the absolute zenith of what the PlayStation 3 is capable of – and whilst we know it’s going to be running in 3D when it releases, Naughty Dog have only just stated talking about the new tech.

Speaking to Edge magazine [issue 228] lead designer Jacob Minkoff has wise words and yet nicely balanced expectations.  “People are only going to buy 3D when there’s awesome stuff in 3D,” he said, alluding to the fact that it’s still a relatively poorly adopted new feature.

“We’re making the awesome stuff that’ll drive people to adopt the technology,” he adds.

When we saw Uncharted 3 last it was running in 2D (although we’ve seen a 3D trailer from the developers) but the way the game embodies filmic qualities so well (like the gorgeous motion blur) suggests that Drake’s latest adventure could well push 3D tech to a much wider audience.

It’s still untested ground – Killzone 3 didn’t really work that well, but MotorStorm Apocalypse certainly did, so let’s hope Naughty Dog know what they’re doing.

  1. I’d like to disagree. Uncharted 3 will be awesome but it will not make people buy 3D TVs. Who will spend $1K to play a 60$ game in 3D? The price of 3D TVs has to drop in order for a wider audience to pick up the technology. Sorry Naughty Dog. Uncharted 3 will not be THAT awesome.

    • 3D is not making me buy anything at the moment, nothing will until its cheap to buy a TV like you said. Also the fact most games out so far in 3D have been pap, according to reviews.

    • Yeah, lower prices and smaller sizes like 20inch etc. are what is needed to get 3D into the mainstream.

  2. Im worried now, like KZ3, if they concentrate on this then it could mean something else isn’t being worked on as much, creating a not so good game.

  3. I hate the fact like someone above said that they put so much effort into it, but as i said before for the price surely they know with 3d that they are aiming at an audience which is no way near as vast as the normal full hd television ownes, i know of 2 people who iv met face ot face who have that tv lol…

and obviously i know quite a few people… But i would rather than out something else in for us… 3d just wont, dont and cant, float me boat!

  4. I hope this is awesome in 3D. I just got a Panasonic 3D TV 4 weeks ago and so far nothing that is supposed to be 3D has impressed me apart from the Stardust game on PS3.

So at some point in time Naughty is going to shoot something at the screen… like an arrow. I’m sure U3 will be awesome in all dimensions but 3D implementation is pretty standard. Throw/shoot/crash stuff at the screen. Until the people that create games can use 3D in a more natural way 3D will remain an add-on gimmick in video games. I hope Naughty truly does do something amazing, but in all seriousness they’ve only had 2 years to make U3, IMO that’s about as quick as you want to make a AAA game, so how much time could they have to make truly awesome 3D effects? Which also leads me to wonder how long U3 will be, I hope they’re not cutting game length to accommodate development of the 3D. I’m looking at you Killzone 3
