New Nintendo Console Includes 6″ Touchscreen

Nintendo invigorated the family market with the Wii – its revolutionary controller was widely derided at first but ultimately made Nintendo a household name for the first time in years.

And, if a report from Nikkei turns out to be the truth, it looks like they’re going to do it all over again.

Project Cafe, the codename for the Wii’s follow-up, is set to be revealed at E3 next Tuesday.   Apparently it’ll feature a 6 inch touchscreen on the console’s controller which will give a ‘tablet-like’ aspect to games.  The touchscreen can be detached, and used as a portable.

Sounds like the console can stream to the controller when the TV is being used for something else, for example – something that we’ve covered before.

The thing will also feature a camera, and will seemingly release in the second half of 2012 , a year from now.  All eyes on E3 then – we’ll let you know what it’s like when we get our hands on it.

  1. This is quite interesting, will it be an idevice-like screen or the normal DS touch screen i wonder

  2. If it is true all depends on how it’s used! And the quality of the console Ll together! Is it gonna be to a ps3 blu ray free online NGP tech? Or just a cheesy gimmick like the wii and 3 ds?

  3. Nintendo should move upto compete with 360 and PS3 now.

  4. seconded

  5. Dreamcast?

  6. not convinced. Wii left me cold.

  7. I’m quite curious about Project Café. I hope they’re using capacitive touchscreens. Can’t stand the resistive ones. They feel cheap.

  8. i think i’ll end up being really excited about it, until i buy one and the games turn out to all be gimmicky and then i’ll quickly lose interest & end up with a very expensive dust collector.

  9. I hate touchscreens. This could put me off the Wii 2. If it has no buttons at all then i won’t be interested in it. I willing to bet that there will be a Mario game on release. I can’t wait to actually see what the thing looks like.

  10. My worry is how durable it is, family gaming means kids and kids like to throw or ‘play’ with things…..
My daughter has taken a liking to climbing on the telly and bashing controllers off of things that are expensive so a 6 inch touch device is begging for it, Wii-motes are fairly sturdy in comparison.
