Sony Aiming For ‘More Accessible Experience’ With PS4?

In an interview with Spanish gaming site 3DJuegos, SCEE’s James Armstrong talks about the PlayStation 3’s successor.

It’s all been translated via Google, so it’s a little tricky to pull out accurate soundbites, but it does seem like Sony is planning on something a little less hardcore for the next console.

“How do you imagine the next generation of consoles? Is it better graphics, new control interfaces, or both at once?” asks the site. “It’s hard to say right now,” says Armstrong in reply. “I do not think we’ll have a console with much better graphics than the PS3 currently offers. I believe the future will be to provide consumers with better experiences and [be] more accessible.”

“The aim will be to make more people enter the world of video games and try to design titles for women.”

Armstrong says that market research shows that it’s mostly boys that enjoy PlayStation – there are no games for girls.

“We [will] try to snag the games,” he says. “If we are an industry that has a product primarily intended for men, we are actually selling for 50% of what we could sell. So if we can make games for women would have a larger business and interesting. I think it’s important.”

We’d love to see a proper translation of this if any of our readers are Spanish.

  1. so the PS4 is turning into the Wii? I’m not sure on this, if they made the spec better, then graphics and games can surely get better?

    • I think more of it as them trying to get back to the PS2 days, where there were more game truly for everybody. :) That, is a good thing.

      • well if thats what they are thinking, then excellent. I used to sit down and play alot of games with my sisters on the PS2.

  2. Sony 1st party exclusive ‘Doing the Dishes’ with Move support. Seriously, this is a good move. Well done, Sony.

    :-P

    • But if they are playing that game, who is doing the real dishes? You lol

  3. ‘Armstrong says that market research shows that it’s mostly boys that enjoy PlayStation – there are no games for girls.’

So instead of catering to our Core audience who have supported us for the last 3 generations of consoles, we’re gonna ignore them to entice people who don’t really care.

I’m starting to see why MS has the lead here, they stick to what they know and to buggery with anyone else.

    • Strange that people see this as a subtractive affair. They’re trying to bring more people to the PS3 (including the massive, and relatively untapped, female market). They’re not sacrificing or ignoring us. Nothing’s mutually exclusive so they can cater to all. You might also benefit with added empathy and emotion being brought to games as female developers/artists/directors start to gain a foothold in the games industry. God knows we’re still miles off rivalling the film industry when it comes to really great stories and how they are told.

      • For what it’s worth I wasn’t being entirely serious but we need more than an iflux of women gamers to resolve the great stories and how they are told debate.

Really the only thing Sony needs to do to become more accessible is make a console that doesn’t cost the best part of £500 at launch and scare devs away from developing on it for 2 years. The PS2 despite having less graphical power than the XBOX and Gamecube was my preferred platform due to the variety of games and it’s accessibility. If they can get back to that then great.

      • Yep. The PS3 will be five years old this year and it still hasn’t dropped below the massively important £200 barrier on the likes of Amazon.

  4. So not really better graphics and the other stuff could just be done on PS3 anyway, so pointless.

  5. I’m looking forward to “My little pony – abbatoir”

    • Special Edition comes with a free sluice gate. Yay!

  6. Hmmm, if they go about the PS4 as they have done with the Vita (learnt from mistakes) then I think most people will be happy.

And then this: “I do not think we’ll have a console with much better graphics than the PS3 currently offers.
If a small handheld like Vita can match the PS3 then surely in the last 5 years technology has improved so a larger form factor (home console) can surely blow the PS3 out of the water, like Sym said, if they just doubled the memory (main and graphics) all games would easily be able to do 1080p (and 3D), plus with a better gpu we should get a true locked 1080p 60fps title.

  7. The translation is fairly accurate, the only different is that he didn’t say that “we will try to snag the games”, but “we will try to make snag women through the games/to make women want the games itself”. Something along those lines.

  8. i ment “we will try to snag women through the games”.

  9. No!!!!!! Don’t pull a microsoft!!!! (Ala kinect@E3)

  10. Yay! I can’t wait for ninja pony adventures!

    • You mean Ninja Pony Adventures 2… Am I the only one that played the first Ninja Pony? :/
