This week two more high profile MMOs jump on the F2P wagon, including NetDevil’s recent LEGO Universe, and City of Heroes, which has enjoyed a strong run of seven years as a subscription-based title. Like other MMOs which have made the transition, players will be able to access the majority of core content without paying a dime, though premium membership options will still be available for those willing to pay. In the case of CoH, VIP members will have an increased number of character slots as well as access to “Day Jobs,” alignment change (introduced with Going Rogue,) and user-generated missions. LEGO Universe customers on the other hand will simply have exclusive worlds and upcoming expansions reserved only for paying customers.
Though LEGO Universe is looking to make the leap this August, there has been no confirmed launch date for the all-new “City of Heroes Freedom.” However, we do know that the transition will come in tow with the game’s 21st content update which is due later this year and will include new costumes, power sets and missions.

So… no need to pay for DC Universe?

Champions Online (another superhero MMO) has been free-to-play for a while now, so you can always try that too. DC Universe is still worth paying for in my opinion; the action-sensitive combat is unlike anything you will have played in an MMO before. Also, if you’re a DC fanboy, there is little reason not to take the plunge.

Yeah I’m already playing Champions, good game. Well I liked the DC Universe beta despite of the freezing. Would love to get once I have enough money.

good news I think. Maybe companies are starting to realise that not all subscription based games are the way forward.
