Sonic isn’t the only one blowing out birthday candles, because multiplayer fragfest ‘Quake’ has turned 15 years old, making most of the team at TSA feel a bit ancient.
To celebrate, the Bethesda Blog has posted a message from id co-founder John Carmack, as well as a YouTube video of the man himself at the QuakeWorld launch event in 1996.

I did a track called “Quad Damage” which used all the speech and FX from Quake as they conveninetly left all the sound files as wavs.
“Excellent!”

Although GoldenEye on the N64 got me into FPSs, I was also a huge fan of Quake 3 Revolution on PS2. Happy Birthday!
(Must also show some love for Sonic!)

i can still remember when magazines were talking about the new id game, about how bodies would fly apart in a shower of gibs, i think that was the first time i’d heard of that word, and there would be a physics engine so you could blow bits of the bodies around, and how it was all going to be polygons instead of sprites like the doom games used.
and in a shocking break from tradition in the gaming industry, they lived up to their claims in the final game too.

Quake 1 is a legendary game and still holds up today. I’d recommend to any gamer that hasn’t played it that it’s worth checking out today. Happy Birthday Quake!
