According to an often reliable industry source, Digitimes, there are plans afoot to launch a new console in the PlayStation range. The rumour, and we have to stress that this is way too early to receive any kind of confirmation from official sources, hinges on the Taiwanese factories that make components for Sony’s consoles.
It seems that these factories (Foxconn and Pegatron) are preparing to swing into production with the expectation of shipping at least 20 million units in 2012. That’s far earlier than we expected and many more units than a limited output of developer units would require. That’s retail figures. We would assume that, if that’s the case, first party developers would already have prototypes in order to begin their launch and early-release development but we haven’t heard anything of that nature from any of our own sources just yet.
The report also makes mention of full body motion controls similar to Kinect.
So what do you think? Are you ready for Sony’s next console or do you think it’s too early and the PlayStation 3 still has a bit of room to grow?

Well the fact is if Microsoft release a new console in 2012 with halo 4 as a launch game then Sony are screwed and it would be the best option in my opinion to launch early like Xbox 360. However I would feel bad for PS3 games that would release late such as the last guardian etc.
Awayze
Halo 4 is stated as an Xbox 360 game.
hazelam
by who?
i’ve not seen that confirmed anywhere.
Awayze
E3, Halo website, Microsoft Xbox website, it says PLATFORM: XBOX 360.
Smallville2106
Don’t believe this at all.

2012 really isn’t far away in gaming terms, without hearing anything official from Sony I’d say it’s not likely. Way too soon in my opinion, the PS3 has only just recently come into it’s own.

Surely all those factories will be busy manufacturing the Vita..?
Tuffcub
The tags at the end of article include “Portable” – I think they’ve got confused with VITA
hazelam
maybe, but then how would full body controls fit in with vita?
Tuffcub
Its got two cameras, no reason why It cant do a ‘Kinect’
hazelam
but kinect uses an infrared projecter and it measures the time it takes the light to return, at least that’s my understanding.
and doesn’t vita have one front facing camera and one back facing.
and aside from the technicalities, how would you do full body tracking when you’re holding the device?
you could set the device down and do it, but then the screen’s a bit small to do that isn’t it?
anyway, maybe that part of the story is wrong and this is for the vita.
only time, and sony, will tell, but not yet. (^_^)
TSBonyman
not quite related but they will be using the cameras for more than AR…

if this was true i would have expected some announcement at e3.
unless this is some reaction to the wii u.
launching so long after the 360 this gen cost sony a lot of ground in the first few years.
maybe they don’t want to repeat that.

Perhaps it will be the PSThree, a whole new SKU and marketing push a new PS3, a bit cheaper again but with a kind of PSEye2 motion controller.
I can’t see how they can forecast 20m sales for a whole new console, presumably at a premium price again. That’s just crazy
TURRICAN-808
Thats a good idea. It would have to be smaller again thaan the PS3 Slim. lighter with less power consumption. From a marketing and sales point of view its worked with the PSOne & PSTwo Slim.
Kovacs
Pegatron! ASSEMBLE!
(Sorry)
Tuffcub
I cant see any reason for me to buy a PS4, it’s not like there’s anything new like Blu-ray that would make it tempting and I’ve spent a fortune on the PS3 in terms of games, online stuff etc, so I’m not throwing all that way.

Backward compatibility would be needed for me to commit
If whatever it is has that I can’t see any reason to keep my PS3… I’ll just pick up the new SKU/console/whatever subsidised the next time my mrs or my mobile contract is up for renewal
DirtyHabit
@TC. How many Blu-rays do you have now? I remember it being a pretty staggering figure about a year ago…
Flexxible
I also don’t see a reason for me to buy a ps4 if it’s released. got around 300 PS3 games and haven’t completed most yet and i also spend a fortune on Blu-ray since i got the PS3.
on the other hand i already start to save 50 Euro’s a month for the next gen console. so on the other hand i would have the money when the thing hits the shelves. did the same for PS3 back in the past, which made me have enough to buy the ps3 + 3 extra controllers and 8 games on release day which was nice
Sab7786
way too early in my opinion, the ps3 has still a lot to offer
