Factories Prepping for 2012 PS4 Launch?

According to an often reliable industry source, Digitimes, there are plans afoot to launch a new console in the PlayStation range. The rumour, and we have to stress that this is way too early to receive any kind of confirmation from official sources, hinges on the Taiwanese factories that make components for Sony’s consoles.

It seems that these factories (Foxconn and Pegatron) are preparing to swing into production with the expectation of shipping at least 20 million units in 2012. That’s far earlier than we expected and many more units than a limited output of developer units would require. That’s retail figures. We would assume that, if that’s the case, first party developers would already have prototypes in order to begin their launch and early-release development but we haven’t heard anything of that nature from any of our own sources just yet.

The report also makes mention of full body motion controls similar to Kinect.

So what do you think? Are you ready for Sony’s next console or do you think it’s too early and the PlayStation 3 still has a bit of room to grow?

  1. Sony won’t launch the PSV and PS4 in the same year

Maybe PSV is suing some components that look like they’re for a PS3 or PS4.

  2. Assuming this is correct, it seems a strange move given the PS3 has finally found it’s feet and is now considered a true competitor in the console market. Given their previous “10 year lifecycle” approach I seriously doubt this

    • A ten year lifecycle doesn’t prevent them releasing a PS4. They still make PS2’s you know?

  3. I hope it’s false or Vita related for two reasons.

    1) Because I feel PS3 is finally being what it always promised to be and arguably the top machine on sale right now.
    2) I can’t afford a new console. :/

  4. Oooh will it have cross game chat.

    • If it does, I’ll find a way to buy it. ;)

  5. Its not early, Its about time there was a console with more memory. 512mb is what the PS3 as right? even the blu-ray needs more speed.

  6. if i win tomorrows lottery, i would buy one next year!

  7. I wouldn’t buy a PS4 if it was launched in 2012 – I am extremely satisfied with my PS3. I am hoping that the report relates to PS Vita, because I am quite excited about that. Sony should wait as long as they reasonably can before releasing a PS4, certainly until at least 2013.

  8. I don’t understand why people always say we don’t need a new PS until at least 2014/2015. The current generation is scrating at the top of the installed hardware. There is only so much polishing you can do to get those last few FPS out of the box. Give those things better specs and make it easier for devs to create games that run at 1080p / 60 FPS and be happy with it. If you don’t have the money for it yet, then keep your PS3 until you can afford a PS4 but for crying out loud, why would you want to stop technical progress of video games alltogether? I didn’t buy the PS3 when it came out because I thought it was too pricey for me back then (still in school) but I didn’t moan about it.

    • Define progress …

Graphics and sound are probably the biggest areas that devs focus on. I’d say that physics need to be the one area that’s perfect. Super Mario World was and remains to be a perfect example of everything that’s right about platforming, nothing has come close since and the simple reason is his jump. You know that failure is always the fault of the player. The only thing in recent times to come close is Demons Souls, It’s a fabulous game and while I’m terrible at it, it might well show us the future.

So what is progress? To go forward, we might have to look back. Power is not always the way forward but Sony have made a lot of money from the creation of Playstation, but I know what I feel.

      • The best example that spings to my mind would be the lack of a coop mode for Red Faction: Guerilla. Volition said thait it couldn’t be done on the PS3. These kind of things hold back the devs. The games might already be great but they could be even better if you give the devs the right tools.

      • Great reply and you’re totally right. I thought that co-op was a bit of a joke until my gf tried it with me. I know that power is useful in more areas but still … I truly believe PS3 has so much to offer.

  9. Too early for me, but I’m not worried. I would rather wait for the problems the first model will undoubtedly have before I invest in one anyway.

    Might be for the best.

    • I’ve been convinced by the PS3Slim, PSP2000, DSLite and the ‘failure’ of the PSPGo to wait until a 2nd model is released too

Cheaper, full catalogue of games, all the kinks ironed out, better power consumption/battery life. 2nd models only for me, unless whatever’s next has full backward compatibility.

      • Exactly. Coughing up more money than later models for something that is more likely to break (the first model of anything seems basically to be the manufacturers idea of a ‘beta’), it just doesn’t make sense.

Though you are right, full backwards compatibility (including for trophies) would be very tempting.

  10. Way too early.
