Factories Prepping for 2012 PS4 Launch?

According to an often reliable industry source, Digitimes, there are plans afoot to launch a new console in the PlayStation range. The rumour, and we have to stress that this is way too early to receive any kind of confirmation from official sources, hinges on the Taiwanese factories that make components for Sony’s consoles.

It seems that these factories (Foxconn and Pegatron) are preparing to swing into production with the expectation of shipping at least 20 million units in 2012. That’s far earlier than we expected and many more units than a limited output of developer units would require. That’s retail figures. We would assume that, if that’s the case, first party developers would already have prototypes in order to begin their launch and early-release development but we haven’t heard anything of that nature from any of our own sources just yet.

The report also makes mention of full body motion controls similar to Kinect.

So what do you think? Are you ready for Sony’s next console or do you think it’s too early and the PlayStation 3 still has a bit of room to grow?

  1. I think the current consoles are starting to hit the peak of what they can achieve. With rumours of the new MS console floating around as well (along with the confirmed Wii successor), I think we are going to see the next gen consoles being discussed officially within the year.

  2. I’m pretty happy with this. I’d like to see new, PROPER home gaming consoles, and I think it’s the right time to extend game development and innovation, as the stuff thats being released is getting boring.

    • In your opinion of course – Others (like myself) are still pretty happy with what has been released recently & what is announced as on its way.

“It’s not you, it’s me” comes to mind! :D

  3. Too early. Not true. We would have been bombarded with bs about ps4 capabilities by now if it were true. Ps3 still has life in it and didn’t someone from Sony once say that due to firmware theres no need to necessarily bring out ps4 same time as any new xbox? It remains the only true next gen console after ps2 and xbox IMO

  4. sounds about right imo. its all about the 10 year life cycle. Just because they’re getting ready for the next home console, doesn’t mean Sony will stop supporting the PS3. If i were to guess I think we’re going to start seeing a more pronounced overlap before next and previous generation consoles.

  5. As others have said, Waaay! too early, who would buy one? The PS3 still seems new to me, no way I’d want or even consider buying a PS4 for a few years yet. The personal financial investment that’s gone into my PS3 is fresh and current…so why in the world would I want to ditch all of that and start again….no way not for me, my PS3 will be in use for a few years yet.

  6. I’m with those who think the source is confused and actually means the PS Vita.

  7. This is total BS.
I’ll eat my PS3 if Sony are releasing PS4 next year.
Personally, i think it’s on about the PS Vita or new PS3 model & NOT PS4.

    • Surely it would be more practical to trade in your ps3 rather than eating it?

That way, you could help with the cost of the PS4! If you eat it, you’ll just get – Well, full! :D

  8. Cooooool. Playstation forever no matter how early.

  9. The sony virtualboy, you heard it here first ;-)
