Shadows of the Damned/Child of Eden June Sales Figures Revealed

More sales figures are trickling out of the North American June NPD, and they aren’t particularly encouraging.

Child of Eden, which we claimed was a “triumph” in our review, managed to sell a meagre 34,000 copies on the Xbox 360.  Shadows of the Damned, which scored a healthy 8/10 in our review, did even worse selling 24,000 copies on the Xbox 360 and PS3 combined.

To put that into perspective, Zelda on the 3DS sold over 283,000 copies. Then again, Zelda was backed by a robust marketing campaign both in-store and on the TV. In contrast some people didn’t even know SotD and CoE had been released.

  1. I wonder whether Child of Eden’s Kinect compatibility is putting off unkinnected Xbox 360 owners? Hopefully it will do better on PS3!

  2. I think peoples perception of game longevity is a little wrong here. Child of Eden I think probably should have been priced cheaper because of it’s length and people involved with development, and I think thats what partly has contributed to it’s low sales figures, but unlike other games it has carefully been designed to be immersive and re-playable, like an arcade game but better. It’s easy to artificially extend game time length when you have a selection of props and re-usable assets, but apart from one small area, everything was unique.

  3. Disappointed but not surprised by SotD’s sales. It really wasn’t supported.

Child of Eden really does surprise me, though. It was showcased at E3 by Microsoft and the press banged on about how it’s a great indication of Kinect’s abilities.

Hopefully the PS3 version fares better come September.

  4. I have no idea what child of eden even is and i check gaming sites daily :/.

Had no idea about SOTD either until someone on youtube im subscribed to made a “Lets play” of it

  5. They would of sold better if they where called –

‘Call of Duty:Shadows of the Damned’ & ‘Call of Duty:Child of Eden’ :D

  6. Well i heop they made some money for making COE Xbox exclsuive for a while.

  7. I think Shadows of the Damned would have had a massive appeal to the “hardcore” gamer if it was a very good game. As it is though, even as a fan of Suda51, I can’t really recommend it to anyone, it’s merely decent and in such a competitive market place, that’s not good enough.

  8. Interesting to see that Play.com are now listing the PS3 version of CoE for only £15

    • Cheers, Tom. I’ve been waiting for someone to mention the price. Right this minute, CoE is £31.99 for the Xbox. That is a truly disgraceful price for the title. Initially I thought it might be a downloadable title for £12 or so but to see it as a disc-based game with a cripplingly high tariff must’ve ruined the sales, surely.

Good to see the PS3 version coming for £15. A damn fine start.

      • No worries, cannot wait for the game, £15 is a bargain!

  9. Well I guess the CoE devs would at least have a stash of cash from MS for being a timed exclusive. I am surprised it didn’t get more marketing done for it, seeing as it’s a kinect game which is actually good.

  10. Child of Eden should never have been a boxed release, let alone one priced at full retail. That’s pretty insulting for something like that.

That the PS3 version is being listed at a third the price the current version costs really is just spitting in the face of 360 owners.

I’d say that it flopping so badly is the right message to send to Ubisoft, but seeing as every Kinect game that comes out seems to flop, how are they supposed to tell why COE is doing badly?
