Sideway may have slipped by many of us but that’s not because it isn’t full of potential. The developers have been showing it off at San Diego’s Comic-Con and talking a little bit about it to IGN.
Basically, it’s a platformer. Heavily inspired by Mario, which is no bad thing for a platform game to aspire towards, but with a twist and a whole big dollop of Hip Hop flava (am I doing it right?)
It’s a 2D platformer set on the 3D streets of New York City. The primary gameplay mechanic revolves around graffiti and the protagonist is kind of painted on the wall. He looks like a LittleBigPlanet sticker that slips, instead of sticks, around a 3D environment. Wow, this is almost impossible to adequately describe so the best way to get an idea of what it’s like is probably to watch the trailer below.
Sideway is due out on the PSN, priced at $10, later this year.

Nice. Very innovative. Will sign up to its informative newsletter.

That looks like a heck of a lot of fun!

It may look fun but it seems tiring and complex, I’m not good at concentrating for long periods of time

Oooh, that’s clever. I’ll be picking that up.

that’s a very unique concept, hopefully the gameplay can live up to it.
but it looks pretty good so far.

That looks quite special!

I can see already that this is being bought. Uniqueness, cleverness, innovation … 3 things that rank very highly on my “Should I buy this?” list. Great idea.

Niiiice. So retail games get more unoriginal and expensive, while downloadable games get more creative and stay the same price. I want the majority of publishers to suffer right now, srsly…

It’s all about risk.
Publishing on the PSN means risking less than publishing a disc title. That allows developers to experiment with new stuff without betting the farm on some idea that might not catch on after all. I hope developers do both types, and once an idea has proven itself in a small title they can use it in a big game too.
Still these guys are taking a risk by trying something new, and from the looks of that video I’m going to be rewarding them for it :D

This certainly looks like a fun game game to play. It made me think about linerider. Where these guys are drawing lots of surroundings without being able to interact with it.

Oops, sorry for the double post. Something must’ve gone wrong on my phone.

Clever. I guess we will see Sideway: London and Sideway : Paris etc as well?
