The 3DS has been taking somewhat of a battering, especially in the past week or so;Â lacklustre sale reports, a mostly tepid gallery of software, and lack of promised online features has left a foul taste in the mouths of early adopters and also Nintendo’s investors, the company witnessing a staggering fall in stock after it announced dramatic 3DS price cuts to give the console momentum.
One of the features which has failed to live up to expectation is the StreetPass Mii Plaza. By putting your console into sleep mode, you can passively interact with other 3DS owners when on the move; these strangers will then appear in your very own Mii Plaza. For the first few weeks using StreetPass is a hoot, players can access a couple of mini-games including a puzzle builder and RPG adventure to unlock virtual trinkets for their Miis but once these are completed (or if the novelty has simply worn off) there is very little incentive to boot up the Plaza thereafter.
It has been reported that during a recent investors briefing Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata has promised new features for the Mii Plaza which are set to be rolled out by the end of the year. We have no specifics as of yet, though Iwata mentioned that a number of upcoming 3DS titles will make use of the social tech. With Sony’s PlayStation Vita apparently launching this holiday season with a slew of interactive online features and friend tracking, Nintendo may have to pull its finger out to win back the trust of core gamers.

Will those features be Online-related ones? No? Didn’t think so…

You never know, Iwata hasn’t given any concrete details. With games such as Heroes of Ruin in the pipeline, the 3DS will be in desperate need of some sort of outer-game interaction between friends on the console.

I know, but they never do the things you’d hope they do. It’s nice to hear of an update, but i won’t get myself excited when I think it will just disappoint.

Hmm I’ve only had around 7 people….Mii Plaza is okay.. but I just fear having to use up much of the coins.
