There’s no doubt about it, the Wii is losing momentum. It’s had a good run though, and is the best selling console of this generation (so far). Siliconera has been doing a bit of digging into Nintendo’s latest annual report, and compiled a list of the top selling Wii games.
The sales for Zelda and Mario Galaxy 2 are quite surprising, and the figure for Wii Sports is mind-blowing (yes, I know it was originally a pack-in title).
Also, bearing in mind how much Wii Fit sold for, 22 million units = “cha ching!”

it’s hardly surprising wii sports being there as they bundle it with every console don’t they?
why do they even count as a sales though?

I can’t believe Play and Sports Resort are higher than Mario Kart!!!
kivi95
Bundle. Sport resort bundled with wii for a long time and play bundled with wii controlles.
Spence1115
Sports Resort has come with the Wii alongside Wii Sports for a while (you can’t even buy Wii Sports separaretly though, why do they include it?) and Wii Play was an easy way to get a second controller.
Watchful
All EU and US Wiis had Wii Sports bundled but that was not the case in Japan, where you can buy Wii Sports separately.
Mr-Flame-Head
you can buy wii sports seperately in the eu now as i was released as a classic title due to the new bundles not having any wii sports games and instead coming bundled with mariokart

Apart from the top 3 and Super Smash Bros, Zelda is the only other game on that list I own. I must get around to buying Super Mario Galaxy at some point though, so that’s an extra sale they can add to the 9.31 million, go me!
carson321
what was the original wii fit board? about £70?
Does that make about 1.5 billion?!
Dan Lee
Think it was £90

Super Mario Galaxy is the best Wii game by far in my opinion, everything about it was great. Gameplay was the best since Mario 64 and it was pretty damn hard too!
Mr-Flame-Head
the thing i dont understand about super mario galaxy is why did somebody put little stars under certain letters in its title which actually spell “ur mr gay”
i know its probably a random coincidence but surely somebody must have noticed
Guyers94
I remember hearing about that and checking it when I got in and it was actually true. Just one of the mysteries of life I guess!
Guyers94
I’m not sure about this but wasn’t there some sort of hack that required Zelda on the wii, and then you did something with it which allowed you to run homebrew games and apps? I’m sure I heard about it somewhere but I never tried it myself.
If someone could enlighten me that would be great as it could account for a fair few of the Zelda sales.
Guyers94
http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Twilight_Hack there it is, doesn’t work anymore so I hope it’s ok me posting it to explain.
I can imagine a lot of people bought Zelda just for that as it was the only way to do it at the time.
carson321
yeah, twas something to do with the game save
carson321
damn it! you beat me to answering yourself!
Guyers94
Haha I have a habit of answering my own questions :P

Wow, they are some pretty impressive numbers. Even Zelda with 5.82 million. The lowest on that list but still great numbers nontheless.
Rad4Life
That is the best chart I have ever seen that displays why the Wii failed so quickly. Out of it’s 12 top selling games, no third-party anywhere. The lowest was Zelda with 5.8 million. Besides Nintendo, no other studio was able to sell more than 5 million units on the Wii. Apart from Just Dance 1 & 2, no third-party game sold more than 2.5 million units. Even then, it was Big Brain Academy. Sad really.

Looks like the only one of them that it’s not made by Nintendo is Metroid other M.
