Sony’s Weird New 3D Visor

I had to check the date on this. You can never be too sure that you haven’t mistakenly slipped through a temporal anomaly and found yourself back in 1991. With Sony sending around images like the one below, I’m still trying to load up Teletext to get the exact time right on my Casio calculator watch.

Sony is going to sell these, in Japan initially but we’ll keep our fingers crossed for US and EU releases. It’s a 3D display, which is roughly equivalent to a huge 750 inch screen, that hangs off your ears and nose. It displays in HD at 720p and includes 5.1 channel surround sound headphones. So, you put it on your face for total, huge 3D, booming 5.1 total immersion. You probably won’t even hear the rest of the world laughing at you.

The price works out to be around the £500 mark, after a rough conversion, which is a small price to pay to look like you’re preparing to meet the GamesMaster.

  1. I want one, I want one Noooooow !

  2. Might be a good alternative to a TV. Does it have split screen capabilities? But no, really, if it was cheaper I might consider it, after trying one out for fit, weight etc.

  3. Oh man, this would actually be perfect for all the time I spend away from home! Throw this and my PS3 in a suitcase and suddenly any hotel room in the world is as capable as my living room.

    Want. Now.

  4. No 1080p!

Will this cause Curvature of the Spine?

  5. OMFG, I just realised the single best application for these ever….

IL-2 (or decent flight sim/driving game) on PC with TrackIR. Would also probably work well with GT5/Forza head tracking.

    Yup, definitely want. NOW.

    • You’re right, that would be AMAZING. It could simply have a gyro in it, which would react to head raising/turning..

  6. Hmm, we may end up seeing another virtual boy then and we all know what happened with that. It looks uncomfortable and i willing to bet that a majority of the games for this will be gimmicks. I bet it will cause headaches and be a powerhungry device. The 3DS is said to cause some headaches with the 3D slider, so i willing to bet that it will either cause migraines or cause the player to walk into things.

    It will struggle at best.

    • No offense but did you read the article?

I think the idea is that it’s a 3D display, meant to be compatible with 3D Blu-ray players and the PS3. It’s not meant to be portable nor is the player likely meant to walk around in it.

You’re probably right on about the headaches though.

  7. Yeah…that’s not happening…

  8. :O

I really hope this reaches Western markets, i love these kinds of devices and I would like to see more of them and to be compatible with more software.

  9. I know the article was meant to be funny but it came across pretty bitter.
500 Pounds is a lot but it’s a pretty nice alternative for a pricey new 3D TV that you will only use to play those 3D PS3 games.

    • yeah, it was intended to poke fun at just how ridiculous this thing is. But also, I kind of really want it.

Not sure what reason I’d have to be “bitter”?

      • It’s laughable at the best. The sentiment behind their design is fine but did the R&D department not look to see the lead reasons why people (especially over in Japan) don’t even like 3D glasses for cinema/3DTV/etc., let alone a visor-thingie? Jeez, Sony. Put the money where it most makes sense, eh? :)

      • Like I said. I know how you mean it but there was just that slight undertone that I felt when reading it. Might have been one poke at it too much that tipped the scale but if that this was a little cheaper and reviews were good I’d consider buying one. Already got 2 TVs at home and none of them is 3D capable…

  10. so can i play anything through (xbox,ps3,movie,pc) these via hdmi ?. if yes then i wuold deffo want a pair.
