Nobody’s denying that Gears of War 3 – released tomorrow – is a great game. Peter scored it a fantastic 9/10 and I’m about to dig into it properly tonight.
[videoyoutube]What I won’t be doing though, is splashing out $45/£30 so that I can have all the weapon skins, something that Epic’s Rod Fergusson announced over the weekend. These aren’t weapons, they’re skins – and they’re, well, expensive.Sure, they’re optional, but they’re also vastly overpriced and – as far as I concerned – aimed at precisely the sort of people that are Gears’ biggest fans – the hardcore, who have to have everything.
The ‘launch collection’ is 3600 Microsoft Points which is the best value deal, the ‘Weapon Collections’ are 1200 Points (5 weapons) and it drills down from there, letting you dip into individual skins.
Only seven skins are unlockable in the game, the rest – detailed here – need to be bought. The backlash, as you’d expect, hasn’t been kind.

Jeez, I’ve just seen the vid for the “rainbow lancer”. Who the hell would choose to use that even if it was free, let alone pay for it.
Least with this sort of DLC you genuinely have a choice with it. If you’re not interested in it there’s stuff all effect on your game other than your enemies having ludicrous coloured guns. If they start releasing maps at this price then there’s a real problem

HOW MUCH!? That is taking the p*ss! I could get a full retail game for that price. In fact, GOW3 is avaible for that price if you look hard enough. That’s £60 if you choose to get the overpriced DLC.:O I thought EA was bad when they priced DA:A for £32 but that was an expasnion, this is a pack of skins.
It should have been in the game. A weapons pack for £1-£3 is okay but this. I’ve just lost a huge bit of respect for Epic. >:( It seems like a joke.

This is just hilarious, and it’s depressing that people will buy this. They will, of course not nearly as many as if it were a reasonable price, but I fear that enough will :/

Back in the day these would have been unlockables for achieving something ingame, the fact that they can be “bought” makes them pretty worthless.
I found the link quite depressing how everyone was desperate to insult each other just for voicing an opinion they didn’t agree with.
