Nobody’s denying that Gears of War 3 – released tomorrow – is a great game. Peter scored it a fantastic 9/10 and I’m about to dig into it properly tonight.
[videoyoutube]What I won’t be doing though, is splashing out $45/£30 so that I can have all the weapon skins, something that Epic’s Rod Fergusson announced over the weekend. These aren’t weapons, they’re skins – and they’re, well, expensive.Sure, they’re optional, but they’re also vastly overpriced and – as far as I concerned – aimed at precisely the sort of people that are Gears’ biggest fans – the hardcore, who have to have everything.
The ‘launch collection’ is 3600 Microsoft Points which is the best value deal, the ‘Weapon Collections’ are 1200 Points (5 weapons) and it drills down from there, letting you dip into individual skins.
Only seven skins are unlockable in the game, the rest – detailed here – need to be bought. The backlash, as you’d expect, hasn’t been kind.

i’m seriously considering getting a 360 just for this game Is it worth it? But even I am disgusted at the price of this. This sort of thing has to stop.
Kamokazi-UK
Well i bought a 360 recently just for exclusives ( well money saved from trading in stuff ) and some of the Game deals for Gears 3 and Xbox look good… but that much for skins???? I has to be a mistake for god sake.
DirtyHabit
Are these different to what a couple of my mates have been ‘boosting’ for on Gears 2 all weekend?
(Is that proper English? I’m very tired)
OneShotWook
Yes their different, the ones confirmed unlocked for previously achieving stuff in gears 1 and 2 are here-

Good job to them if they got veteran gear in 2 though:).
DirtyHabit
Oh right :)
And in reply to the article, no, I wont be buying them. Looking forward to tomorrow tho :D
jason1971
what a rip off
Gamoc
That’s a whole new ball game when it comes to over-charging. Just astonishing. I hope not a single person wastes their money so they don’t even consider doing this again.
enroene
Seconded.30 pounds just for skins, that’s daylight robbery imo.
Sad Panda
I class this just under the plans to lock single player content in Rage under the rip off stakes.
R4U Eldave0
Agreed. This is shocking but the Rage team can take a running jump imo.
Grabacr
Typical microsoft.
Grabacr
Overrated generic games and rip off DLC certainly are their forte.
DirtyHabit
Like all the other companies are any better.
hazelam
what the fuck is bleszinski smoking if he thinks that’s an acceptable price.
ah, for the simple days when people were shocked at horse armour.
we’ll all look back one day and see that was the beginning of the end.
does anybody still not think this industry is driven by insatiable greed?
hazelam
i’m going to say again, this culture of greed is going to cause another games crash, i believe that.
but you know if this is the direction the industry is heading, maybe another crash will be a good thing.
these publisher need to be taken down a peg or two.
they think their greed is more important than our rights and they think ownership is a concept that only applies to them.
they need to learn they’re not all fucking powerful and that’re not in control.
this industry is becoming morally and creatively bankrupt in pursuit of every fucking penny they can get the grubby little fucking hands on.
and before anybody says anything, there is a difference bewteen a desire to make a profit and the shit this industry has been pulling lately with its constant need to satiate its greed.
OneShotWook
Who couldn’t agree Hazelam but it just brings this industry in line with any other. It’s a shtty day that we have to ask ‘how corrupt are they?’ rather than ‘are they corrupt at all?’ to help us make a judgement call.
The devs will suffer for sure but the likes of Ea and Activision will go on balancing public image versus profit margins without considering any creative reason.
hazelam
but it’s not exactly in line with any other though is it?
in any other industry, you buy the product, you own the product.
that’s the way trade has worked for millenia.
now gaming alone wants to do away with that.
i know this isn’t directly related to dlc, but i bring it up because the cause is the same.
greed.
OneShotWook
Misunderstood sorry Hazelam,i was referring to a culture of greed in general as opposed to the new ways in which software publishers are using it.
Yes i agree when compared to a book or film it does seem were being forced(albeit badged optional ofc:)) to pay to see it through to the end.
bacon_nuts
Sorry, but I am of the opinion that all industries are driven by greed, and it’s called Capitalism.
bunimomike
Same here. They will charge as much as they think they can charge. As always, people need to vote with their wallets.
OneShotWook
Does seem greedy and i agree with Sad panda as regards it being a flashy patch more than anything additional.
However if you pay 30 quid for the whole lot thats 21×5 weapon skins both animated and static,i’ve no doubt that some will want all of them and that options there, however won’t it be more likely most will just purchase a ‘set’ of skins(5xweapons)? Which then makes it similar to buying a goofy avatar item for your dashboard or a flashy dynamic scheme for your ps3.
It’s an incendiary subject and one that i’m not entirely comfortable with but it’s kindve misleading to lead with the 30 quid option without mentioning the 240 point per set option,i consider myself a core gears fan(can’t say hardcore because i’m not very good tbh) and i just wouldn’t consider mixing my fluffy pinks with my blood splattered chainsaws let alone ever using what will be eventually be 40+ sets of weapon skins.
I’m just trying to add reason here, like i said 30 quid just seems like greed on the buyers and sellers behalf.
Devil2k
You know, the skin pack costing almost as much as the game itself would sound even more ridiculous if all of the skins were already on the disc… ;>
Bilbo_bobbins
lol this has to be a mistake, if its not, then god help us all.
enroene
Fight back with your wallets people.
