Gears 3 Shifts 3 Million In One Week

The juggernaut that is Gears of War proves that it still has what it takes to connect with gamers, with Microsoft today announcing that the latest game has sold three million copies in just a week.

“In just one week” says the press statement, “Gears 3 [has] already grossed more than any 2011 video game to date” making it the “biggest game of 2011.”  The franchise has now moved more than one billion dollars.

Bonkers.

We scored the game 9/10 here in our full review.  “Put simply, it’s a brilliant end to one of the finest trilogies in gaming,” said Peter.

  1. Pretty funny/clever of them getting all of this language out of the way before Modern Warfare 3 breaks all their records. Smart bit of marketing.

    • I was thinking exactly that. Incredible sales regardless. Especially as it’s not exactly a quiet period.

  2. Very impressive to have that many sales in its first week, let alone be an exclusive game. This should please Cliffy B!

  3. Tis very impressive. And it is smart of them to get it out before COD is out. :) It’s already outsold Zumba. ;D

  4. Gears is brilliant and one of the best indeed, well on CoD is released it might hit higher target but I fear Zumba 2 will be in teh World Guinness Record 0_0

  5. Wow, it’s a bit sad though – I mean to me a game like this is nowhere near as good as Deus Ex – it just doesn’t have enough depth for me, and yet this gets way more sales. I guess Gears is more well known to the casual-ish market. That and the xbox exclusive line-up has been a bit barren of late has it not?

  6. Well to be fair, 360 users have been waiting for this one game only since Black Ops, not like they had any other choice of games….

Biggest game of 2011? No, clearly it’s MW3.

    • Is it really that clear? I’m no expert but BF3 seems to attract quite a few shooter fans these days.

      • Skyrim is my personal choice :)

      • Skyrim and UC3 are my biggest games of the year followed by MGS HD and ICO and SOTC Collection as my biggest remakes of the year. :)

    • Speaking as a 360 gamer, I can vouch for that statement. There has been naff all to play all year in terms of exclusives! :(

      • And as a 360 gamer in response to Dave I agree. I just redeemed my code on GOLD Live just for Gears of War 3!

      • As a player on both consoles, I agree. My XBOX was collecting dust waiting for Gears 3.

      • You need to check out the stuff that’s out on XBLA

  7. Sales don’t make a game…

    …but it helps :P

    • No really, they do! Sales makes sequels. ;)

  8. I’ve played GoW3 and it is to be fair, epic. A brilliant ending to a brilliant trilogy. But I do agree with Crocadillian… Sales don’t make a game.

  9. That’s awesome for 360 but having seen the barrage of marketing for it here in the US on television, billboards and pretty much anywhere you can imagine, it’s not a massive surprise. Also, it’s no secret that the 360 exclusive line-up has been pretty light this year. With sales like these, I can’t help but feel we’ll see another GeoW game.

  10. I cant wait to try this game. I fear it may take me ages to get around to it though. Yet to finish GOW1&2, Same with God of War. Yet tio finish 1&2 so God of war 3 is still sitting there sealed

    • I see you have the same problem as I have. Too many games to complete, with too little time. Deus Ex is still unfinished, I gave up on Assassin’s Creed 2, just recently finished Batman AA, Prince of Persia still there, Fallout NV…geez. I might just sell the games I haven’t finished and move on.

Skyrim, BF3, Uncharted 3, Batman AC, Rage…all must buys, and must finish.
