Tweak It: PlayStation Move

The Wii was widely derided prior to its launch.  Whether it was schoolboy-like sniggering at its name or open mockery of its motion-sensing controllers that looked like TV remotes.  Gamers and analysts wrote it off as a failure.

Nintendo then promptly sold tens of millions of the consoles, easily trouncing the opposition from Microsoft and Sony. How much of that success was solely down to Wii Sport Bowling we’ll never know but now all the consoles (360, PS3, 3DS and Vita) sport optional or in-built motion control of some sort.

The Wiimote has been such a game changer, by more than one definition, that even though the PS3 launched with the waggle-sensing sixaxis controller Sony felt the need to chase the market Nintendo had created with the Move, but more on that in a moment.

While the Wiimote has clearly been a success there’s always room for a tweak or two.  Nintendo tweaked it themselves when they added Motion Plus and last week we asked you for your own tweaks.  The two most popular were:

  • Make it more tactile and grip-able without having to resort to a silicone sleeve. ~ TheShepanator, Jumping Monks
  • Give us an official Nintendo wireless Nunchuck. ~ G_The_Enemy14, TheDeathAvenger, Lymmusic

So coincidental you’d think it was planned (it wasn’t) this week’s Tweak It dovetails nicely with our other posts reflecting on Move’s first year.  While some games have made better use of the Move hardware itself than others it’s the hardware we’d like you to tweak now.

Personally, while I understand some of the ergonomic reasons why the four symbol buttons are arranged in a square as they are on the PS Move, I’d still like to see them back in the much more familiar and now muscle-memory retained diamond formation.

I’d also like the Start and Select button to be easier to access and press.  It almost seems as though the only consideration in their placement was to make it easy for clip-on or -around accessories to have easy use of them not us mere humans.

What about you?  How would you tweak the PS Move, Navigator and the PS Eye?

  1. Camera should have had infra-res built in for poor light & maybe addition of 2nd lens to allow actual body tracking.

Support needed to have been far better for devs

So faryo Kinect then? Yes, but…
Move itself is awesome the accuracy shown in Sports Champs table tennis is still unrivalled & that speaks volumes. Speaking of Sports Champs, why is there not a sequel with a bit more charisma, character rather than the sterile characters & backdrop of the first & online play, etc?

In short PSMove can be tweaked by Sony actually paying it some attention & not just leaving it to the lazy option of an alt control scheme in FPS, why not a Move exclusive Uncharted release along with the other big hitters like they’re doing with R&C

In short Sony pick the ball back up or just mothball it.

  2. this is a solid piece of kit that sadly never really took off.
apart from move support in games and a handful of move orientated games to be honest it fekin blew on every level..
think i charged mine up when i first got it now its just gathering dust..

  3. R1 button abover trigger on back, and an analogue thumbstick i stead of move button… A bit tricky to get used to but imagine the possibilities

  4. More visible on X-ray, for when it gets lost in my colon.

  5. The Move is fine, the PS Eye needs an upgrade.

  6. Make Konami add the wii features of PES on to the PS3 version so we can play it using Move (sad yes. But everyone rates PES on Wii better than on anything else)
Make it so we can choose the colour of the ball, I mean lets be honest. You don’t feel like a bad ass playing The Fight when you have a pink ball flying in front of you.
And the major one to me. Actually bring out some games for it, I mean at the moment my Move isn’t on Ebay because of Top SPin 4, Resistance 3, KillZone 3 and The Fight, and I don’t intend on using Move online for Resistance 3 or KillZone 3 and I don’t intend on going online with Top Spin 4 or The Fight. So make some games

    • I actually found using the Move on KZ3 was almost cheating lol. I only played the beta and I literally obliterated everyone. Not sure how much things have changed from then but if not much has then Move users definitely have an advantage with the right setup. I’m talking first place in every game here.

  7. Navigator- same motion axis like in PSmove.
    Rumble.

PS eye- HD and 3D motion scanner. (kinect)
Some to help see in dark rooms.

    PSmove- Two triggers.
Magnetic tracking technology. (‘Razer Hydra’ This could get
    rid of the ball.)
Start and Select on the front on the controller.

PS3- Cursor on XMB and ALL game menus.
    Cursor for Web Browser.
All DS3 button commands are remap for move.
Some motion controls for DVD/Bluray/Netflix playback.

No need for an extra thumbstick because i feel that will make Developers use even less motion controls.
Have to require all games to use it.

    • All most forgot.
Some new way of syncing up the PSmove or no syncing at all.
I hate syncing for games like killzone and Resistance. I have to do
it like 3-5 times to get it right.

      • Yeah, thats the most annoying part of it. i can look down the sights on sharpshooter and sometimes after the 5th or 6th attemp, it actually becomes nearly acurate!

  8. The button layout should be like a normal PS3 controller but we need some hardcore games that are easy to play with Move. KZ3 was tooo hard with Move.

    • How? I was easy to me. Really easy.

  9. The Start and Select buttons are definitely poorly positioned and make the Trigger ‘click’ instead of ‘squeeze’.

  10. I argree that perhaps it would be easier to use if the buttons were in diamond formation, but for my bigger concern is the subcontroller. From what i’ve seen you can’t play two player when the game requires a subcontroller. I’m sure you can play two player using numchucks on Wii, so why can’t you on PS3?

I also think that not having motion controls on the Subcontroller limits what you can do, for example you can’t insert a waggling the sticks to run bit and use analogue during the rest of the game.

Basically my big complaint is that the controllers need to be mixed and matched better. Telling the PS3 that if one Move is player one then the other Move is also player one, etc.

    • RE5 me and my brother can play split screen with two navs and two moves with no problems.
