Mojang Wins Interim Injunction Over ‘Scrolls’ Lawsuit

Mojang can use the name ‘Scrolls’ for their upcoming game, at least for the time being.

Markus Perrson’s, aka Notch, tweets read:

“We won the interim injunction! We can keep using the name “Scrolls”. Zenimax/Bethesda can still appeal the ruling, but I’m very happy.”

A follow up tweet reads:

“I am very happy. :) We never meant to infringe on anything Bethesda does, and this means we didn’t. :D I love those guys.”

This lawsuit came about when Bethesda tried to sue Mojang over the use of the name ‘Scrolls’ as a game title.

Apparently consumers would get confused between The Elder Scrolls series and Mojang’s Scrolls game. When the news of the lawsuit first broke Mojang had said that the case “would set a bad example for the industry.”

  1. Good. Glad to see stupid lawsuits thrown out.

They certainly didn’t seem to care that their Rage was similar to Streets of Rage, did they?

  2. It seems that Bethesade’s Lawyers are sue happy. :-/ Bit ironic considering their origins. Anyway, i’m glad that he won as it was a pointless thing to sue for. :)

  3. Thank God for that.

  4. Phew, I was going to make a game with “The” in the title. No I don’t have to fear a lawsuit and people won’t confuse it with “The Elder Scrolls”.

  5. I’m already confused by the names!!

  6. What, they thought that people would think that ‘Scrolls’ was perhaps the newer version of ‘The Elder Scrolls’ or something?

    It’s a bit far-fetched isn’t it?

  7. Additionally, does anyone else think that they really should make a mahjong game?

    Mojang Mahjong. No?

    • Yes they should – this is why I first looked at the article. I misread. Mahjong is addictive and awesome – I think there is a minis version, but “Mahjong HD” should definitely happen.

  8. though i dont really think they should have sued didnt bethesda say they didnt actually want to sue it was a case of if they didnt try and protect their game name in theory they could lose the rights to the name “the elder scrolls” because of not taking action

  9. Great news, always thought that was a massive waste of everyones time and was generally stupid etc.

  10. I read on Kotaku that Bethesda sued because Mojang tried to get the rights for anything media related that has “scrolls” in it including TV and radio shows etc.
