When you buy the 3G version of PS Vita there’ll be a Vodafone SIM card included, allowing you instant mobile access.  You’ll also be able to buy a PS Vita from Vodafone – both online and on the high street.

In addition, if you do sign up, you’ll be able to download WipEout 2048 for free.

“With social gaming and connectivity at the heart of PlayStation Vita it is important that we partner with a market leading network provider, to ensure users have a high quality 3G experience.” said Jim Ryan, President & CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe.

“Partnering with Vodafone will enable PS Vita users in the selected countries to always be connected with their PlayStation life, friends and games, wherever they are.”

Sony have told TheSixthAxis that Vodafone is just the ‘preferred partner’ for Vita, for the record.  Owners are free to swap out the Vodafone SIM and use any suitable provider once purchased.

PS Vita is available in Europe on the 22nd of February, 2012.

  1. I’ll be sticking with the wifi model then and tethering to my phone on O2! Vodafone data network is appalling in my area.

  2. Hopefully this will be the same system as Japan, where it is more of a top up style system rather than a contract.

I’d go for the 3G model if it was the Japan model. Not interested in a contract at all.

  3. Do we know how the 3G works yet? Is it subscription/PAYG/prepaid etc. ?
Also I wonder if this means they will allow roaming. Doubt it but you can hope can’t you.

  4. So by ‘preferred’, presumably they mean ‘forced’? If I put a giffgaff SIM in there, will it work? Can Vita be ‘unlocked’?

If it’s Vodafone or nothing, I’ll cancel my 3G pre-order and go wi-fi only.

    • Musterbuster just told me via Twitter that Vita is not locked, which bodes well. Sounds like you’ll get a Vodafone SIM with it, but you don’t *have* to use it.

      • This is true.

      • And I’ve just noticed it says that in the article.

Was it just added, or did I miss it in my rage?

  5. Soo many mobile contracts these days! I think I’ll tether my iPhone unofficially to the PSV as I’ll be on Wifi 99% of the time anyway.

  6. Don’t know, never bothered with phones simply because of price and inspiration from Luca (>.>)..

Its nice to be using 3G just to be connected but the prices must be great and the internet better be free..and to send messages, since thats free on PS3… and other things (>.>)

  7. I definitely won’t be using them. The official ‘preferred partners’ for these things never seem to offer the best deal, it just shows which carrier was willing to pay the most to win the partnership.

Giffgaff is an excellent cheap PAYG provider with contract-style deals in monthly goodybags, for anyone who’ll be considering an alternative to Vodafone: http://bit.ly/k4r7o9

    • See I was thinking exactly this, use them for my phone and are such a cheap reliable provider.

    • You won’t be able to use their normal goodybags though, as it’s data-only. It’ll need to be one of their new databags.

I’ll be getting one for my Vita, no question!

  9. I think I will be getting the 3G one but not using Vodafone, I find that Vodafone charge too much for too little.

  10. Im reserving judgement until I see a pricing structure.
