Wipeout 2048 Zombie Mode Canned

Nothing’s more depressing than when a cool game feature gets cut before release.

Studio Liverpool – creators of upcoming Vita title Wipeout 2048 – have revealed that a planned a ‘Zombie’ mode for the game had to be removed during production.

The devs have explained that ‘ZOMBIE’ played out much like a survival mode – you would be pitted against swarms of zombie ships hell-bent on destroying your craft.

You could defend yourself with powerups like Cannons and Quake, but the longer you survived, the more undead ships would appear to ram your vehicle into oblivion.

So why would Studio Liverpool choose to taunt us with info about an awesome – but canned – game mode?

“That said, like a real-life Zombie, ZOMBIE mode is dead, but it’s not completely dead. :P”

Incredibly obvious hinting of ZOMBIE mode as future downloadable content, that’s why.

To whet your appetites for the content we’ll no doubt be buying at a later date, here’s some amazing concept art of a zombie ship:

  1. I don’t understand why people are complaining about this mode. It’s called Zombie mode. It doesn’t actually feature undead creatures. The ships that attack you do one thing and one thing only. Mindlessly try to kill you no matter what. In my opinion Zombie would be a fitting description for this kind of behaviorand it actualy sounds like a fun game mode.

    • It actually sounds like a logical progression of the eliminator mode that was found in Pulse and HD Wipeout’s where you had to fight to the death with other ships. The Zombie mode would just be a increasingly harder version of this. Zone mode already does this and increases the difficult as you progress.

Eliminator mode has become my best played mode of Pulse with over 30hrs into it, a lot more than the main mode. Not sure how many hours I’ve put into the HD version of it. It’s a lot of fun to had.

      • I agree with both of you, everyone seems to be getting enraged at the sight of the word zombie.

  2. Wow, bit overegged with moans about a teaser for possible future wipeout fun. I mean, i get your point but i’m pretty sure you’ll get the full wipeout package with retail version. Don’t want DLC/Zombie mode, don’t fork out the extra. Sheesh, born to moan!

  3. I’m pretty sure that zombies can’t fly spaceships. I wouldn’t call it a zombie mode but a rogue AI(or something that sounds Si-fic) :)

Sounds like an excellent feature but if they do sell it as DLC, i won’t be happy as they would have cut it out just to sell it to us.

If they were having techinical problems with it and were forced to side line then i would understand.

    • With the energy draining mechanism/power up that is already in Wipeout, perhaps a Vampire mode would have sucked less – i mean more.. oh what am i trying to say? ;)

I for one will be quite content to skip this DLC. Besides the way it’s been ‘announced’- it just doesn’t sound like my kind of fun.

  4. Piss off Zombies.

  5. Ummm… people seem to be getting hung up on the name. How about if they called it annihilation?

TBH I think this mode sounds great, but it I have a tendancy not to buy DLC as I find it is usually overpriced.

  6. Cool, I love the combat in Wipeout, as I’m not a great racer the ury tracks and modes are definitely my favourites.
