EA Shutting Down More Servers, Includes Online Pass Game

EA has posted a new list on their website detailing server shutdowns.

The idea behind it is to cut down on server costs and EA stated that it would be affecting less than 1% of their peak time online users.

Still, there are a few games in there that might annoy some of you to see, including MMA which requires an online pass and was released just 18 months ago.

  1. This is why there should be no online trophies cause once the servers hut down it effects the trophy and that sucks

  2. EA MMA is a bit of a shock/disappointment – Whilst I am not the biggest fan of MMA, I did consider buying it when it was heavily reduced in game the other day.

    Glad I didn’t now! :O

  3. funny, how i thought those online passes were supposed to pay for keeping the services running.

that’s why people were paying for them right?
i thought that’s why people who bought preowned had to pay even though there was a still just single spot taken on the servers for that copy.
having to keep the servers running for longer wasn’t it?

guess that was bullshit then wasn’t it.

not the fault of the people who said that though.
they were working under the erroneous assumption that ea possessed even rudimentary morals.

  4. The Midnight Show pack for The Saboteur is free on PSN might be worth grabbing to have on the system incase you get the game in the future.

  5. What a piss take, this epitomises the greedy attitude of some of the big publishers. I bet the Journey servers run forever!

    • Journey, like every other game apart from EA games, use Sony’s servers though. EA run their own.

      • I guess that’s a good thing. In all seriousness, I know the companies running the servers have to justify their spending but why shut down the servers altogether, especially when some have charged specifically for the online portion. An example of a more player centric attitude, the Homeworld servers ran for about ten years, being scaled back throughout their existence nonetheless being provided free for the players. For games such as MMA and Need For Speed, I’m sure a scaling down of server provision would be possible rather than a shut down.

  6. I can understand why servers that aren’t used will be shut down. It’s awful that they are
Asking for people to pay for an online pass when they don’t guarantee how long they will be operational for.

  7. I would actually be interested to see the stats of what games are currently still active enough to be classed as ‘viable’.

I mean, FIFA (& other EA Sports titles to a lesser extent), BF, NFS (apart from prostreet it would seem) are all pretty much staples of EA online gaming, but it would be intriguing to see what lesser known titles are still drawing the crowds.

  8. Any game which has a pass should run for a minimum number of years, else what are you paying for?

Also some of those games haven’t been superseded, like Sports Active 2 and others.

  9. Piss take, IMO!

  10. I understand it but some of those seem a little early, then again, to a few of them the online is hardly integral and not connected to platinum trophy collecting either.

I’m glad EA release a list rather than just turning them off, then when you buy an old game, it doesn’t work because the servers have been switched off in secret.
