EA Shutting Down More Servers, Includes Online Pass Game

EA has posted a new list on their website detailing server shutdowns.

The idea behind it is to cut down on server costs and EA stated that it would be affecting less than 1% of their peak time online users.

  1. EA Sports Active 2? I haven’t even openend my copy yet!

    • Me neither…

      • The online service never worked properly and was wholly innacurate when it did anyway, youo won’t be losing anything by not being able to connect to the servers.

      • I opened mine and did the first session. Once i recovered from my near-cardiac-arrest i boxed it up again and placed it carefully out of harms way in the back of a cupboard, where it remains… like a loaded gun – should i ever want to play russian roulette with my life through the medium of a motion controlled video game! ;)

      • Not the best game. But no longer possible to Platinum as there’s online trophies.

      • I have 50+% trophies on this and although it’s a few months since I played it I think only 1 trophy requires online connection.

“Making Friends-Join or create a Workout Group” is the only one I believe that needs the EA servers and it is do-able straight away, you just have to make up a name and it’s done.

As far as I can remember the Survey trophies are all offline (they are just a way to make you examine your lifestyle, not to compare with others) though I’m not 100% sure. If I am wrong they only take 5 workouts to do and that’s totally do-able before EA switch the servers off in mid-April.

        They are:
“Survey Says-Fill in 5 Lifestyle and Nutrition Surveys
Staying Alive-Fill in 5 Other Activity Surveys
Checking In-Fill in the Lifestyle and Nutrition Survey
Getting Out-Fill in the Other Activity Survey”

Finally I think it’s worth pointing put that the multiplayer trophy (below) IS NOT online. It require 2 sets of equipment and 2 users in the same room.

        “Workout Buddies-Complete a Multiplayer Workout”

    • Don’t do it! I broke my foot playing this “game”!

  2. Flogged my (unopened) copy of MMA a couple of days ago, after it had been sat on the shelf for a year.

  3. sabotuer? still not finished that yet.

    • I wouldn’t worry, you’ll just get to see less digital boobies (which actually feature less in the game than i would have hoped anyway!)!

Has absolutely no affect on the game apart from that.

  4. Seems early for quite a few titles.

  5. It would really suck if you had just recently bought an online pass for MMA and i understand the servers can’t be maintained forever but i do think there needs to be a more timely announcement, say three months in advance and a simultaneous withdrawal of said online pass from the store at the time of anouncement.

    • this is the problem will ALL online activation, dlc, server side checks. at some point the publisher will stop the service. Another reason why i hope physical items never go!

  6. Noooo, not Burnout Revenge :( I hated Paradise so I regularly fire up Revenge for some Burnout chaos

    • Would kill for a PS3 Burnout game like that. Hopefully EA let Criterion off the NfS leash at some point.

  7. Anyone know more about The Saboteur online feature??

    • Midnight Club, the code came free with new purchases but was premium for anyone who bought a game where the code had already been used.

      • if ive already activated my digital breasts then can i keep them or do i also lose them :)

      • Hm, good question.

I would assume that as with any other ‘unlock’, it would stay active once activated.

      • Unless it verifies you’ve activated by going online to check?

    • Its so you see digital boobies in the strip club base thing. That’s about it as far as i recall & if you are anything like me, you won’t be spending a lot of time there anyway, as there is so much to get out & blow up! :)

    • Thanks chaps. Think I can give the digital chebs a miss ;)

And would second-hand buyers actually pay for an in-game digital strip club?

      • I would like to think not, but i think that would just be me being naive!! :S

  8. The biggest problem with this is the way they work out how titles should be dropped. 1% is a small amount but when you take into account how many people buy Fifa, this seriously warps the percentages to unfavour titles.

Games will AND are (unfairly maybe?) falling into this category and therefore being dropped before they should.

    • Yep, the 1% figure isn’t indicative as the volume of players playing FIFA, Battlefield & now ME3 would warp that figure massively.

      • yeah this is true. i was on sports active this morning and it said there was just over 53,000 users in total. oh well, i can still use it but not upload my stats. not too fussed

  9. Not sure what to think of this. On the one hand there must not be enough people playing these games online for it to be worth while. On the other, seems way too soon for MMA.

  10. Give 7-30 days before some American starts up a class action. There will not be issue about EA closing servers down but some games have EA Online Pass.

You know it going to happen, they are American!

    • well good luck to them i say.

they’re charging them for a service, and then they’re shutting it down.

    • It probably should happen if a game utilises an online pass & then the servers are suddenly shut down – I thought that was kind of the whole purpose of the online pass system (or project £10 as its more fondly referred to by EA)?? At least that was how they explained it, but i think we all knew it was a direct attack on the pre-owned market really.

Lack of notice being one reason people should be annoyed of course though – That is not even a whole months notice! What happens if you just bought the game yesterday (or god forbid the day before they shut the servers down)?

EA Create, MMA & Spare Parts are actually pretty shocking decisions seeing as none of these titles are particularly old (last year maybe?). I know it’s on a percentage basis, but as was said above, EA have more than enough well played games to completely skew this percentage in an unfavourable manner.

      • Well they’re not so great and with low sales so I guess it isn’t really shocking.

      • i’d be pretty shocked if i’d bought any of those games.

thankfully as soon as they introduced the passes that was never gonna happen.
        not new anyway.

i feel my decision has been vindicated once again.

      • Maybe not so shocking, but you would have a right to be annoyed. & whether they are any good or not is subjective.

Besides that though, who actually keeps an eye on sales of a title before purchase & allows that to affect their purchase? No-one i know.

      • That was actually in response to sympozium.
