Nomura on FFVII Remake: “New Titles Take Precedence”

Quite a lot of people want a Final Fantasy VII remake – we know it, you know it and Square Enix certainly knows it.

In an interview with Famitsu, the series’ character designer Tetsuya Nomura shared his thoughts on the possibility of a remake.

“There are a lot of people who want a remake of Final Fantasy VII. However, new titles take precedence.

“We work our hardest to make something that might be even better than Final Fantasy VII.”

To put a further dampener on the chances of  a remake emerging any time soon, Nomura also commented: “The new Final Fantasy must overcome the Final Fantasy of the past.”

Last year, Square Enix producer Yoshinori Kitase outlined that a remake of FFVII would take “ten times longer to create” than Final Fantasy XIII, so their message seems to be to shut up about a remake because it certainly isn’t happening any time soon.

  1. I understand what they are saying but still, it would be worth it wouldn’t it. Maybe they are making it but are keeping it very secret because it will take so long.
They should have never put peoples hopes up with that tech demo of the opening scene, it made me think it was happening.

  2. That “take ten times longer to create” quote is still totally laughable. This statement is far more sensible and reasonable.

    • Yeah. Let’s just say XIII took 3-5 years to develop from creating the engine to finishing the game. No game would take 30-50 years to REMAKE…

    • I think the original still holds up quite well today, the only problem is that you forget where you were last time and you don’t get any hints about what to do next. Meaning you get lost!

      • I would welcome a remake but still adore the original. If it aint broke. A physical re release would be great (although I have a brand new sealed ps1 non platinum copy) ;)

  3. Final Fantasy Versus XIII has the potential to be amazing. I really hope they get this game out soon. I hope he wasn’t talking about XIII or XIII-2. I really enjoyed those vames but they aren’t even close to VII. I wonder if they are already working on XV…

    • Based on information relating to DLC, Im predicting XIII-3 unveil at E3. With no mention of Versus!

  4. They should just make a new movie. :D

uh really before starting any new games, for gods sake.. get Versus done first and no way they better not dare to remake the opening of FFVIII for PS4 has that will definitely blow gamers minds.

  5. “FF7 was popular because it was the first 3D FF game, that is really all. The reason we consider it overrated is because we see people rate it above games like Zelda Ocarina of Time and Super Smash Bros Melee which are according to many, more deserving of the title “greatest game of all time”. Hell, you have people who think that Halo is the greatest game of all time (I disagree, but yeah).

Still, if you look at FF7, it has many issues not just attributable to graphics. It’s pretty slow-paced, it’s hard to see what is going on, level design is ok at best, characters don’t have much personality except having a big sword or boobs (Tifa got FAMOUS just because of it). Its most iconic scene was ripped from Lufia 2, etc… It’s not necessarily a bad game, but it was attributed with the first tragic death of a heroine when Lufia 2 did it much better and much earlier. It was attributed with an innovative battle system when it really was a rehash of FF6 plus a few additions from Lufia 2.

FF7 also has one of the most agressive communities of fanboys in video game history.”

Taken from an IGN comment box user named Vigilante_blade while commenting about “FFVII remake” article. Somehow i do agree what the Vigilante said, but FFVII remake would be an welcome… though i prefer FF VI remake and FF VIII remake.

  6. I’d love it if they re made VII but honestly where the hell is versus

  7. what like FF XIII vs? o_O
    or is it vs XIII?
it’s been so long i can’t even remember which.

    • I doubt it will remain that (vsXIII btw). Agito got re-named coming up to its release, so could easily happen again.

  8. I want a MGS remake
