Sony Announce New – Wait For It – PSP

In a rather staggering display of – well, we’ve no idea what – SCEE have just announced a new PSP. A new PSP. PSP. In white. We pinched ourselves, and it’s still there. We even checked the date.

Look, the damned thing is real:

Whilst we assume that in doing all this not a single second of research and development has been diverted away from future consoles and – you know – the PS Vita, this isn’t what Sony should be doing. They, and their consumers, need to focus on Vita.

There’s a brand new handheld console out there that’s suffering sales-wise, and this won’t help, it just won’t. This isn’t even a proper PSP, it’s that daft restricted thing that nobody even noticed when it was released in black.

We’re confused. Frightened. Shocked.

    Do they think that the previous, black, E1000’s sales figures were low because everyone saw it and thought “it’s got good specs, if only they made it in white”?

    Maybe they’ve just got a warehouse full of white plastic they need to get rid of before it goes past its best before?

    Sometimes I get dinners like that – “but these foods are a bit weird together” I say and Mrs C replies “yes but everything was going out of date soon so we had to use it up ”

    Then I go back to my mashed potato stir fry and pizza in silence.

  5. Over-react much?

    It’s the latest model with a new colour shell. Seriously, what’s the big deal?

    For some reason, people like different colours on these things, and it tempts them to buy. Never have figured it out, but I guess some people are weird like that.

    I have a Vita and I love it. If people aren’t ready to buy one yet, they aren’t going to buy, regardless of weather the PSP is available in white or not. This makes no difference whatsoever.

    Saying they shouldn’t release this is like saying they should have stopped selling PS2 when PS3 arrived. Nonsense.

      What people are saying is why devote time and resources to bring out a new model of an old console rather than focusing on the new handheld they have just released.

    • My thoughts too.
      Although I’m still surprised that this is a white PSP rather than a white Vita.
      I reckon there’ll be more Vita colours announced at E3.
      I never understand why handheld consoles aren’t made available in multiple colours- the GameBoy series showed how nice they could be in a variety of colours, and the NGP reveal showed us Black, White and Silver Vitas.
      I’d have chosen a silver Vita if I’d have had the choice…

      • I had a silver Gameboy Pocket! It was either that or see-through purple. Sometimes, at night, I still wonder if I made the right choice.

        You made the wrong choice in my opinion.
        I’d have taken the yellow one personally, although I never had one of the classic GameBoys.
        My first was the GameBoy Advance, I got a nice little white one.
        There were better looking versions released too though.

      It’s a shell colour, not a new PSP – get a grip.

      Seriously dudes, don’t get so uppity, it’s all meant in good humour to illustrate how odd the decision is.
      I guess it’s also indicative of being slightly alarmed at the fact that SCE are putting time and energy into making and marketing a new colour of PSP rather than trying to get some life back into the Vita before it flatlines completely. But, whatever.

      • I’d agree with most of what you said CB, except for one part.

        Do you REALLY think SCEE will market this? They don’t even market the Vita, or games like Starhawk…

      • I think you have remember that’s Sony’s aways been about longevity. So it makes sense to release a newer model. Don’t worry about Vita that will have it’s day (in about 5 years) : )

        @Nick – that’s true, and the PSP is still going gangbusters for them but a new colour announcement feels like a very weak marketing move, given that there is a whole new console they could be talking about in that space. I guess my tiny, repressed optimistic side will cling to this being put out today so that the big stuff can come at E3…

        and Colm, this is scee, i wouldn’t put it past them to do just that.
        they’re boneheaded enough to think promoting the outgoing psp is better then promoting the new vita.

      • Oh I get it, the whole article was a joke. Ha ha.

        I’m quite sure all the ‘effort’ to make this particular model of PSP in white was already done when they decided to make this PSP. I’m sure they have already road mapped it in red, blue, pink and silver too. It takes 5 minutes to write a blog post announcing it – hardly diverting attention away from Vita now is it?

        Oh, and Vita? You might want to wait for this little thing called E3. Sony have flat out said it will be at the heart of their presentation – http://uk.playstation.com/home/news/articles/detail/item497448/E3-2012-%E2%80%93-are-you-ready-for-it/.

  6. It ain’t half pretty in white though. Don’t forget the PSP is probably still massive in developing countries like the PS2 was then the PS3 first came out. Also, release the Vita in white and I will buy one tomorrow.

  7. Is the bar at the bottom touch sensitive? It looks it.

    • Don’t think so. Probably just a strip of plastic over the buttons.

    • If it’s like the psp street, is really just plastic over the buttons. And since those are not backlit, it makes VERY hard to find the pause when playing in the dark… Ahhh, I want a 3000…

  8. In an effort to combat this shock move by Sony, Microsoft has announced that it is to re-release the original Xbox without Xbox LIVE, no HD update and in fact no cookie making facility. The’new’ machine named the “Recycling-box” will cost roughly £50 as a budget console competitive to the PSP E1000 White. Oh, and did we mention it’s pink?

    • I’m not buying it, the cookie making facility was the best feature!

  9. Bit of an overreaction here I think, how many of us would buy our ten year old kids a vita? Not too many I’d guess. On the other hand, this psp would be ideal for them and the games are relatively cheap as well. Then maybe they’ll upgrade to a vita in a couple of years. The only problem I can see is I think it should be a bit cheaper. I reckon it should be £20 less.
