Doom 3 On PS3 ‘Challenging’

Stencil shadows are raster pigs, apparently.

I think that’s something technical rather than Doom 3 will feature Jamaican Porcine variants, and id founder and technical director John Carmack would be the man to know.

He was asked on Twitter if ‘there any chance to see more ‘next gen effects’ like DOF tessellated meshes in Doom3:BFG on PS3′ and he replied;

“Just getting Doom 3 BFG to 60fps on the PS3 is more challenging than you would think. Stencil shadows are raster pigs.”

  1. Raster pigs? Call in Rasta Mouse!
    (Sudden image of Rasta Mouse vs DoomGuy.. Quite freaky)

    • There is i raaat in da kitchen, whattema gonna do?

    • Ha ha I’d watch that fight

  2. He should be able to do it surely he’s the best programmer in the world? :)

  3. Did he mention texture-map sloths?

  4. Ah, this is just pathetic. As someone who has Doom 3 on PC that can run it silky smooth and a PS3 with a sizable library of games…
    I call it now. iD started failing at programming. Should have all know that by now, with all that Rage pop-up.

    • To my knowledge, id tech engines are very ram intensive; something of which the PS3 is lacking in compared to competitors. While it’s true that they could focus on using the cell, they probably don’t want to spend more money to redo everything. Plus, each cell used causes a short delay on input, hence why Cod never really hits a smooth 60 frames, because it only uses one of the cells. (Or at least that’s what I’ve heard.)
