thatgamecompany Get $5.5 Million Investment To Go Multi-Format

Journey is one of the PS3’s best gaming experiences. For me at least, it’s flawless, breathtakingly beautiful and represents everything that I want gaming to be, rather than this homogenised nonsense that most publishers pump out on an annual basis.

And now creators thatgamecompany have broken free of Sony’s three-game deal, and – with the help of a hefty chunk of cash – officially gone multiformat.

In his latest blog studio head Jenova Chen, the visionary behind the three games currently only available on the PlayStation brand (fl0w, Flower and Journey) explains that Benchmark Capital are behind the investment – all $5.5 million worth of it.

“Today I am pleased to announce thatgamecompany has raised funding to develop and release our games independently,” he said. “This enables us to bring our games to more platforms and provide our players the highest quality experience at every point of contact.”

“We are extremely grateful to Sony and the many players who put their faith in us,” said Chen.

Whilst he remains at the helm of the six year old studio, others have left, but we’re hoping that the innovation and charm of their games can continue without them. I’ve met a few of the tgc crew, including Chen, and they’re all such warm, considered people.

I personally wish the company all the luck in the world.

  1. Just because they have gone multi platform doesn’t mean that the games will not be on the PSN or PS3/4. This just means that whatever they work on next will be experienced and enjoyed by more people and that’s a good thing. I am sure they will not forgot who gave them their first big break and supported them when many other publishers or companies would have written those games off.

It also means that Sony can invest or encourage new talent to the PSN and who knows what that will bring. We might find another studio with the vision and ability to make games on a par with what TGC have produced over the last few years.

Its good all-round if you ask me!

  2. Make no mistake Sony wouldn’t have let this happen if TGC were happy to stay exclusive. This is a decision made by TGC and probably a good one for them. I can only hope they continue the high standards they have set for themselves. Journey is truly briiliant, a masterpiece in gaming.

  3. I’m surprised Sony didn’t buy them as having TGC develop games exclusivly for the PS brand would help to sell consoles. I wonder what will be TGC’s first multi plat game? I think Nofi may kill me and other TSAers for not owning a single TGC game yet. ;)

  4. iOS, please!
