Look, I know this isn’t exactly huge news. In fact, I don’t think it’s really news at all. It’s a quiet day though, so allow me this little folly.
It’s a single screenshot (or render, you can never be too sure) from Ubisoft’s eye-meltingly delicious Watch Dogs.

Some places are salivating over this and declaring that it’s far too good to be “this gen”. To that, we say: “Duh… that’s because it’s a PC shot and good PC shots haven’t looked like current gen consoles for a couple of years.” because we’re a bit snarky like that on a Friday afternoon.
It is gorgeous though and I’m still a little bit dubious of the claim we’ll see this on Xbox 360 and PS3 myself. But that’s a good thing. Stunning, slightly unbelievable graphics are what a significant portion of loving this pastime is about for me. That and the parties, obviously. We have awesome parties when nobody is looking.

Looks like GTA IV with one of those fancey-pantsey mods running.

Yes it does.

I think the PS3 is barely capable of producing the graphics that we are seeing in the screenshot and i would imagine it would be at risk of overheating due to the strain put on the system due to Watchdogs. I doubt the 360 would be able to do this as it’s the least powerful of the bunch.
Then again, Ubi may surprise us and have both consoles running the game on the same level as the PC version.

Lol no.

If it were 720p and heavily optimised by naughty dog level talent then possibly could look this good, as it mostly looks of similar quality to last of us, in this shot anyway… But that wont happen.
This will be like battlefield3 was, practically next gen version shown early, then heavily pared back for consoles. Even if they aimed at next gen consoles i doubt the dev kits are in the wild yet so optimising for current gen consoles might be easier than optimising for next gen.

reminds me of GTA4 the pic.

I think PS3 could produce graphics shown in the picture if developers properly use the Cell and GPU with hard work going into the games graphic code.
Didn’t GOW3 only use 50% of PS3’s power so if Ubisoft went down that road with not everything being interactable in the background, it could be done at 720p at least.
The only game that makes my PS3 fan go up a level from the normal speed is Uncharted 3 compared to other games like BF3, God Of War 3, MW3, GT5 etc. It kind of indicates that PS3 isn’t firing on all its cylinders every second of a game.
