Space Marine has probably seen a bit of a resurgence lately. Its inclusion among the freebies in the excellent PlayStation Plus offer means that many of you will have braved the substantial download and given it a go recently. So we’ll have plenty of commentary to draw from for WeView.
A quick scan down the comments on last week’s request for your opinions does not start particularly well. After Sympozium demands we buy it, there are a string of less than positive comments with MadBoJangles going as far as to call it “Utter tripe” because of its repetitive nature.
We have to get six comments down before we find Ericldn with some reasoned positivity. He says that although it is repetitive, there’s a certain “hypnotic” quality to it that he enjoyed. Jambo and hazelam both agree that it’s enjoyable although they acknowledge the repetition too.
Overall, the comments seem filled with cautious, caveat-filled praise or damning negativity. We have to wait until halfway down the second page before we hear about the game’s multiplayer first-hand from Mundham: “I’ve had some cracking games on MP with some of the TSA lads, and it is far superior in depth and variety than the SP campaign.”
Dom El is clearly a fan, having played the game first via OnLive and then on PS3. Here’s what he/she thought of it:
I’ve been a fan of Games Workshop since I was young and whilst it would have been nice to have seen greater scope in the environments – such as different planets – they captured an under-siege forge world well. Whilst I admit the gameplay can become repetitive it has a great physicality to it, and the art style and story helped carry my enjoyment enough to make it through to the end.
So it was a bit of a mixed bag of comments about this one. Several people seemed put off by its repetition but others seem to have enjoyed its ties to the table top franchise and look of the game. The situation is confused somewhat due to the fact that this game can be grabbed for free from PlayStation Plus at the moment but, generally, the advice from the WeView community is that we should pick it up cheap or rent it.
In this case, I guess that means “play it if you get a chance but don’t spend much on it”. With seven votes urging us to avoid it, though, it might be prudent to try before you spend money or download bandwidth on it.

I bought the disc version in December. I have so far put approximately 2 hours into it, it just didn’t grab me in any sense, which is a shame as I always liked games workshop stuff. Gameplay is just boring.

On the plus side, at least its cheap.
Which depending on when you bought it may or may not have been the case for you. Hmm… I feel my argument may be flawed. :)

Got this from ps+ and probably would never have even considered it without it being free. Pleasantly surprised at the sp, yet to play the mp. If the mp is as good as the mp i shall definately watch out for any sequel that may surface.

the mp should be as good as the mp (unless we’re talking parallel universes – ala Fringe) ;)
MadBoJangles
Still stand by my “Utter tripe” comment. :D
Literally zero intention of going back to it any time soon.
Even though it’s free.
And has easy trophies.

I’m definitely a he! And Onlive’s gimmick that posts a video to facebook when you get certain achievements was a fun addition too – a very playable game all round.
