Tiny Wings 2.0 Released As A Free Update, But iPad Version Is £1.99

[drop2]Tiny Wings 2.0 has released onto the iTunes Store overnight for iPhone and iPad.

However, to the surprise of pretty much everyone in the industry it’s actually a free update to the existing (69p) title rather than something gamers have to buy outright again.

The initial Tiny Wings was a massive success, coming out of nowhere to be one of the best games on the platform with its simple but massively addictive gameplay.

It was a perfect match for the iPhone.

“I never clarified if it will be an update or an seperate app before the release because then my fans will be happy on the release day when they see that the sequel isn’t a seperate app and they will get it for free,” said developer Andreas Illiger.

“I worked on the 2.0 version for the last 12 months and everyone told me I should make a seperate app out of it and sell it again (because it is almost a new game and I would earn a lot more money).”

“It was a heavy decision for me to give away this new version for free but it feels right (most people I talked about this subject don’t understand it.”

“So I decided to give it away for free as a big ‘thank you’ to all my fans for changing my life. That’s really important for me and the reason why I make this little stupid marketing trick of confusing my fans before the release.”

The update includes the same randomised mode from the original but adds Flight School (basically a race against three opponents in fifteen new levels). A separate iPad version (which costs £1.99) offers up incredibly beautiful Retina graphics and a two player split screen mode.

  1. is that just it? a race thing against 3 AI?
and it’s been worked on for a year…?
Everyone’s been hyped about… something so small..

    • Not sure if serious.

      • definitely serious, im happy it’s a free update, and I would have purchased it if it was a new game.
but if that’s all it is, a race mode.. that’s taken a year to make…. uh.. what?

      • Did you miss the part where he made an iPad version? Or the multiplayer aspect? Or the fact that it’s now all running at Retina resolutions?

      • Is that “new iPad” Retina or iPhone 4(s) Retina?
Am I the only one who thinks it’s stupid to use the same word for two completely different resolutions?

      • The iPad version which is essentially just an upscaled version of the iPod Touch version? which doesn’t interest me as I dont have an iPad?

and yeah, the multiplayer aspect is the racing bit, and retina display? god forbid that everything didn’t run with retina display!

  2. Well played sir!, I’m over the moon its a free update.
You may not get another 69p out of me today, but I can assure you that in the future you will be getting quite a few of my hard earned British pounds

  3. I was definitely pleasantly surprised to see it was a free update last night
