iPhone 5 Could Be Announced Next Month

Most people assume that Apple will hold back their next iPhone until the usual September / October window. However, this year that’s apparently about to change following some recent rumours that Apple want to combat Samsung’s success with the Galaxy S3.

KnowYourMobile is claiming, via a ‘reliable industry source’, that Apple will unveil the next generation phone on August 7th at a special keynote.

No details have been revealed by the source, sadly, so there’s only the recent leaks of the phone’s casing to go off, but it’s safe to assume that iPhone 5 will have a larger screen and another processor boost.

It’ll also come with iOS 6, which is currently only in beta.

We should stress that these claims are, as yet, unfounded and several other “in-the-know” outlets have implied that the August 7th announcement date would be very unlikely. It won’t be long until we find out.

  1. I can’t help think how newsworthy a rumour, wrapped in conjecture, from an anonymous source, in the corner of shadows, with dodgy cataracts can truly be…. and I’m looking forward to the iPhone 5 announcement! :-\

    • boring day, just trying to get some discussion going.

      • Ah, no probs, fella. Had worked that much out. For me, I’m fascinated as to what they do as all smart phones are pretty damned decent these days. The value added stuff (this time around) is more important than ever before.

I really don’t have a clue what Apple are going to do but they have some of the best product designers on the planet so will hopefully have something up their metaphorical sleeves.

      • That’s a really smart point to make actually – with everything being so good, where do they push a unique selling point?

I think Apple’s hardware design and marketing is still a long way ahead of any competitors and the reliability and ease of use in their software is streaks ahead too but with Android being capable of quite a bit more, it’s becoming difficult to see what’s exciting about the iPhones. That lack of excitement might be enough to slow the sales? Maybe?

      • Funnily enough, Apple’s ability to show a premium product with a great iTunes store to back it up is never more important. Especially as they all converge to “a handset that does everything” which they’re kinda at now. Still… I’ll see what they come out with. Could be something wonderful. Hope so.

  2. As gaming journalists, did you ever expect to be covering the announcement of a new phone as the latest platform? Aha.

  3. Intriguing though I’m happy to say that I’m absolutely over the moon with my new HTC One V. Does pretty much everything my iPhone 4 did for a fraction of the price.

    • They might look nice but they (and everything else Apple) are well over priced.

      • I think aside from my monthly contract cost, my HTC hasn’t actually cost me a penny.

Ooh, i lie – I upgraded to the ‘full’ version of draw something for 69p… & now no-one plays it! ;D

      • Apologies, was supposed to be in response to aerobes. :S

      • Having had an Apple Laptop, iPod and iPhone, I can say that they definitely are not worth the money in my opinion. Exceptionally well designed and built pieces of kit but the cost disparity between them and competitors is just stupid.

      • @Forrest. Yeah, I had a HTC Legend way back and it was fantastic so I knew the One V was a good choice and it’s proving to be pretty awesome!

  4. The new Iphone is a Samsung Galaxy S3 sandwiched between 2 Iphone 4s’

All joined from Sim card slot to Micro USB port to create a single charging er…… tract!

Apologies, I ended up watching the Human Centipede over the weekend, followed by the South Park version.

Everytime I hear Apple, I ask myself, Have I read the T&C’s?

  5. To quote the well informed Jim Dalrymple, “Nope.” He’s practically never wrong.

This rumour really hasn’t picked up any traction in the press, iOS 6 hasn’t been in beta for anywhere near long enough to be hitting GM in a month, there haven’t been enough leaks of photos of parts to indicate that the device is already being manufactured in quantities high enough for an August launch, and the last time Apple announced an iPhone and didn’t release it about a month later was with the original device’s unveiling.

It’ll be September/October, just like last year.

    • Correct me if I’m wrong but I thought I read that iOS 6 hit GM a few days ago. There were also leaked photos of a 4″ iPhone that looked hauntingly similar to the iPhone 4(S). Apple would never admit it but it would be stupid to give HTC (One X, S and V) and Samsung (Galaxy S3) more time to sell their phones.

      • That was OS X 10.8, for computers, not for phones.

The prototypes seen so far are very indistinct at the moment. If Apple were on the cusp of a launch announcement, we’d have far clearer leaks than what we do right now.

      • Ah, fair enough. I just scanned over the headlines. Sloppy reading! :P
I just hope they do something about the glass based design. They are known for their beautiful design. Three iterations with the same design just seems a little lazy.

  6. As exciting as it may be I’d rather it be later than sooner as it means my pockets gonna be a few hundred quid lighter. I’m not going get tied to a 2 year contract so I’m going to have to buy it out right. Tesco’s did a 12 month contract for the iPhone 4 but I think they’ve stopped it now. Luckily I haven’t got a whining bird to tell me what I can spend my money on :)

  7. iOS is getting boring, UI wise but still iPhone 5 will be the best phone out there. There’s a reason why iPhones are more expensive, Apple don’t cheap out on parts like HTC and Samsung do.

    • Hurrah, Apple fanboy trolls! I wondered when you’d get here.

      • According to your member dates, a year before you.

      • Why would member dates affect wether he’s an ‘Apple fanboy troll’ or not?

      • Not “I wondered when you’d get here” then lol

    • Sure they do, just in selective and better disguised ways to the masses. For example, whilst many Android phones last year had 1GB of RAM, iOS is engineered in such a way that Apple could get away with only having 512MB of RAM in the 4S.

Similarly quad-core CPUs are everywhere now, but the 3rd iPad has only a dual-core CPU as a compromise to the beefy GPU needed to run the Retina display.

The reason why iPhones are more expensive is because of capitalism. Apple have priced the device at a point where people are will to pay the premium.

  8. & then 4 months after that the iPhone 6 will grace us with its ‘presents’, everybody loves Christmas.

    • Eh? The iPhone has been almost annual (with the newer version) to the month! :-\

      • I thought that they released a new one everyday and the Iphone 6 is actually the 6millionth version of it. :op

  9. Another iphone, I didn’t see that one coming. I wonder if they will try to make it as small as possible? As apparently, having small devices is cool now.

If it’s touchscreen only again, i will refuse to get it due to my hate of touchscreen tech. I would rather have IOS5 then a beta version of IOS6 as i don’t fancy getting an OS that could be full of bugs. That said, if they didn’t do a beta, i would be one of the first people to complain about the lack of a beta. Also, i’m guessing it’s a slow day today. ;)

  10. I very much doubt it.
Would love it to be true though, I want to upgrade my Nokia N8, and I’m holding off to see what Apple announce for the next iPhone, seeing as I already own quite a lot of Apps from my iPad.
That said, the Samsung Galaxy S3 looks very tempting too. When’s the next Nexus getting announced? Last one only has a 5MP camera, not exactly jumping to get one of those after the stunning camera in the N8…

    • I can vouch for the S3 – I’ve owned one for about a month now, and I’m constantly surprised by how good it is. The Nexus is also a great piece of kit, but as you say, the camera is a bit of a let-down; additionally the display can be a bit muddy at times.

You can bet there will be another device along to beat the S3 at some point, but I doubt it’s going to be released this year. I highly doubt that the new iPhone is going to be a world-beater, and the majority of Android manufacturers these days seem to lag behind Samsung in terms of overall quality. How things change from a couple of years ago – I would have said HTC had it in the bag!

      • I’m thinking that will be the case all right.
I’m still holding out until the iPhone announcement at least though, just in case they announce something that I really should have waited for.
If it comes close to the S3, I’ll probably go with the iPhone, simply because it’ll cost me far less because of the iPad I already have.
Still, the S3 is ridiculously powerful…

      • HTC came back with a bang with their One series. In my opinion Samsung botched it by holding on to the Gingerbread buttons. :/
