Running around in bright icy meadows with a co-op buddy is far less scary than abandoned, monster filled spaceships. The decision to change the direction of the third Dead Space game was based on market research that found the first two too scary.
Speaking to trade site MCV, EA’s marketing head Laura Miele that that although they were “really proud” of the first two Dead Space games, they “received feedback to understand how we can take the game out to even more consumers.”
“We were hearing feedback that they love the thriller game, but it was pretty scary, and the obvious next step was that they wanted to play with someone. So we introduced co-op into the game.”
It sounds like the scary stuff will still be there, but the introduction of a co-op partner should make things much less scary. The horror of Dead Space is still all there,” she said. “It’s still true to its roots and no less scary, but people felt far more comfortable playing it with someone else than they did doing it on their own.”
“Personally, I would rather go to [a] scary movie with my husband rather than sit at home with the lights out watching one on my own. We’re looking for that to reach out to consumers that perhaps were not open to Dead Space 1 and 2.”
Brilliant.

IT’S SUPPOSED TO BE FUCKING SCARY! Otherwise it wouldn’t be an effective horror game. *facepalms so hard that he breaks his hand* Why else would people buy Dead Space? It became popular due to it being one of the last remaining true horror games untill it was murdered by EA. :(
It’s like complaining if your tea is too hot, you will be annoyed if it’s cold and the barrista gave you a cold tea just to protect you from hot teas. (actually, that’s probably not a good example to use).

A better example would be the difference between Resi 1 & Resi 5. Dead Space just got there in less sequels is all.

That is just ridiculous! The point of Dead Space was bringing back a decent scary game was it not? Horror is supposed to be scary it thats why it’s called horror. Dead Space origins were horror and they watered it down with Dead Space 2 and now with 3 it gets worse.
What’s the point in making a horror game and not making people feel scared.

Dead Space 1 was the best really. Number 2 just felt the same :-/
hazelam
yeah because the last thing you want a horror game to be is scary.

Does this mean Dead Space 4 will be a comedy/horror ? Followed by a romcom – Dead Space 5 (I married a necromorph) ;)

Fuck EA and Fuck your DS3 Co-op!
I enjoyed DS 1 and 2 alot, but it wasn’t scary though… it had too many generic scare/jump scenes.
I’m going back to play Fatal Frame series and Slender they are much more scarier than DS series.
Origami Killer
Ruined the franchise for me now. It just looked like a coop action game with no sight of anything scary at all in the E3 footage.
Playing DS2 without the lights on, volume turned up high was a great experience. Every shadow would make you jump! It needs to be single player only so the idea of isolation can make it even more scary.

Twinkle twinkle little star…I enjoyed both dead space 1 & 2 brilliant games and will be getting number 3 no doubt about it.

So….. EA have gone and fucked it then. Simple as that.
Dead Space 1 was the most underrated game of this generation, they then threw on a half arsed MP to cater for the masses and now they have decided its best to put what made it good in the first place down another notch to cater for more.
You got it right the first time EA, dont fix what aint broken!
