Welcome To The New TheSixthAxis

Welcome to the new look TheSixthAxis homepage, just in time for Eurogamer Expo. Never before have we so rigorously tested, changed and rebuilt a modification to the site, but finally, after about a month, we’re happy with it.

It’s a little different, but allow us to assure you that everything’s still there, it’s all just moved around a little to make reading the homepage, which was previously nothing more than a vertical list of posts, a bit more interesting.

It’s also much more tablet friendly – the visitor numbers of readers reaching the site on iPads and other tablets have shown that there’s a real requirement to change the way our stories are displayed, and although it now fits perfectly onto most tablets, it still fits within the standard 960px width so laptops and desktops should be absolutely fine.

Posts are arranged into sections, largely chronologically, with breaks every now and again where we highlight our featured articles, like reviews, previews, features and our community posts. When a post is something we really want you to read, it’ll be subtly labelled ‘hot’ and will feature red visuals. Otherwise, posts are blue.

You’ll be able to see what each post is about directly from the homepage – that means you can see if it’s a review, or news, or a feature, and you’ll also be able to see who’s written it, when, and which formats it’s for. So if it says [PS3], it’s about a game or service on the PS3. Multiple formats just say ‘multi’, though, for clarity.

You’ll also see an image for every post, something we’ve not done for a while, and hopefully that’ll make picking out the stories you want to read all the easier.

We truly hope you like what we’ve done, but if you don’t that’s fine and we’re not bigheaded enough to force it on you – the ‘blog’ style version will still be accessible at this alternative homepage – https://www.thesixthaxis.com/vertical – so feel free to jump between the two, at least at first, and pick your favourite.

We’ve also made a couple of smaller changes around the site – the homepage should now load much faster (the loading of images is delayed until the browser window reaches them, for example) – and there’s a few minor cosmetic changes to the story pages.

Naturally, with things like this, there’ll be elements we’ve missed and that’s where you (hopefully) come in. Let us know in the comments and we’ll pick up any issues over the next few days.

And remember that our super-light mobile site is still the same.

A gentle reminder that we’re (almost) all down at Eurogamer Expo this week and weekend, so whilst the numbers of posts might not be quite as high for a few days we’re available for chats and a beer or two if anyone fancies it. The easiest way is to ping us on Twitter at @thesixthaxis and we’ll respond if we can.

Finally, thanks once again to everyone that visits, posts and spreads the word, and to those that helped test the new homepage. We truly appreciate it, and more than you might think.

  1. Unsure how i feel about the new makeover that Alex gave to TSA. A part of me hates it due to my hatred of touchscreen tech and this reminds me of it But another part of me kinda likes it. Did prefer the vertical homepage due to it being easier to find articles and may make finding stuff for the round ups a bit hard with the new layout. But it does load up faster without causing FF14(i would update to FF15 but AVG is being a bit of a pain in ye arse and won’t update their linkscanner thus i can’t and refuse to surf without that on) to crash. I did encounter a problem with the forum earlier. Turns out the smileys are part of the link limit. :O Suspect i will embrace the new homepage soon or get used to it.

  2. Cure fears change!

That said, not sure about the switch around yet. I’ll use it for a while and then decide. Guess it’ll take some getting used to, then I’ll wonder how I ever got on with the old style…

  3. I like it.

It’s probably a good time to change just now with the added EGX traffic, that way people can get used to it over a shorter period.

  4. Very snappy. The speed is a huge immediate benefit and it all looks very nice and fresh. I’ll learn more about the other changes as we move forward.

    • Thanks. It’s taken about a month to get it as close as we can to being right.

It’s still obviously a WIP though, any good ideas coming through will hopefully get implemented.

Already working on ideas to filter by format.

      • I’m not much of a specialist when it comes to HTML or website design in general but is there any way to speed up loading times on the /vertical page? Surely it must be possible to apply the code improvements from the main page to the old layout.

      • The old site used a lot of redundant database stuff (for the filters, mainly), most of that is gone now.

/vertical should stagger the image loading though, so it should be a little faster at least, no?

I’m kinda hoping you’ll take another look at the new homepage in a day or so, too. =)

      • I’ve been switching back and forth throughout the day but it doesn’t get any better for me.
The two/three column order of the articles feels cluttered and unintuitive to go through. It really looks nice and flashy but it takes me longer to go through the list and I’m here for the content, not a pretty main page. I often check TSA in short bursts at work and every second counts. :)

      • Fair enough. =)

Well, the old style page will remain.

  5. Boo! I liked the long list of topics – It allowed you to see what was new & what wasn’t. Now i haven’t got a bloody clue!

Looks nice enough, but i just can’t find anything at a glance anymore.

    • As you said in the other comment, you can still view the site in its old style at http://www.thesixthaxis.com/vertical/

There was no way we were just going to swap and hope everyone liked it, that would have been daft and bigheaded.

Looking at ways to let you pick and keep the same format on the normal homepage URL, too.

      • Overall (unnecessary moaning aside), i think you actually did a great job with regards to speed, accessibility & creating a look that was more at home on a tablet, but sadly for me, i am just an old moaning git, who is stuck in his ways!

Really pleased that the option is still there to view in chronological order. :)

      • If people didn’t have an opinion or want to voice it, it’d be a shitty world.

  6. I like it but I found it a bit confusing would probably be better if I was on an tablet.

  7. It’s confusing now at first, but I need to use it a bit before I makke up my mind.

  8. Just had a quick look on mobile safari and it looks good, nice & clear, that said though, I mostly use the mobile site as that is super quick & easy to read on the go.

  9. damn, i was only away a few hours. O_O

anyway, looks good, it’ll take a bit of getting used to but i like it.

i didn’t know about the mobile version of TSA though, you probably mentioned it before, but you know me and skimming. ^_^

  10. There’s probably nothing you can really do about this but in the ps3 browser the Dishonoured advert is spamming the right hand side of the page, blocking the site login link. (both the new home page and the vertical alternative). I was able to login by canceling before the advert loaded.
Ps3 browser is a tempermental beast though so it might not be an issue every time.. :/

Props to Alex and everyone who has been working on improving the site. I must say i’m envious of the loading speed of the new homepage but the vertical format suits me better.

    • Same here m8 but i could avoid it altogether and log in straight away.
As when the page loads it displays the latest trophies but i don’t want to log in right away i like to go to the home page and see the headlines first then i tend to log in but that’s when the Dishonoured advert starts messing about.
It’s nice to know that i’m not the only one it’s happening to.8)
