Sony Say No PS Vita Price Cut Until Next Year

Fergal Gara, Sony’s UK boss, has said the PS Vita will get a price cut, but it won’t be this year.

“We always aim to establish price cuts,” he said. “So the question is not so much if, but when. We won’t have an across the board price down this Christmas.”

Gara goes on to demonstrate some of the current bundles. “But what you will see us doing is work very hard with our retail partners to add value to the product to make it more compelling.”

Currently available bundles include a Wi-fi Vita and LittleBigPlanet for £200. “We will be working that very hard over the coming weeks as more and more software arrives,” Gara said.

And in terms of how the Vita is selling? “I’d say it’s done reasonably well, but I’m a sales guy and motivated by selling, so I’m never going to say we’ve done well enough.”

“What’s important is we’ve got great software now as we face into peak. We’ve seen it time and time again on Sony platforms and others’ platforms: when you’ve got great software you can give it a great push.”

(Slightly confused) TV adverts for LittleBigPlanet are currently airing.

  1. Ah Sony stubborn as a donkey, the vita needs a Christmas price cut especially the 3G it ain’t doing nothing for people. I regret buying the 3G model, they best somehow make it 4G by the end of the year when 4G rolls out..

I seen a lot of vita advert recently, I was like no way 7 month later you start advertising but I have seen this ad on one channel itv1 after xfactor or champions league

    • It has to be a new model of Vita to run 4G, no 3G only device can run on 4G as far as I know.

      • It could be done, all Sony has to do is release a patch that utilise 4G frequencies and transmission protocols

      • And install a 4G chip.

It hasn’t been done on any phone, doubt it’ll be done on the Vita.

Especially as 4G isn’t standard around the world, or even common in wealthy countries.

  2. I’ve only just got a Vita and I’ve only got one game, but I’m amazed at the steep price and poor range of games so many months on! It’s another machine packed with gimmicks sitting there going ‘hmm, what now’, I’m in no doubt its not worth the money at the moment.

    • Theres plently of games for it but I guess it depends on taste or the liklyness to play ol games on the system.

    • Plenty of games but tend to be lower risk games like Fighters/racers are dominant so if you don’t like those types then no not much scope. However why did you buy it without researching what games are available? Unless it was a gift of course :)

I personally would like more RPG’s or big open world games.

Persona 4 and AC3 hopefully will fill that gap.

      • Sympozium, you’re right I suppose, a bit part of it is my tastes.
Damo, I got it cheap from a friend who didn’t play it :) And you’re right too there are plenty of games but only a tiny handful with the mutts nuts quality, maybe range was the wrong word but the games my mate had seemed really lacklustre, I had a go on a few and he put all but Wipeout on eBay. Having said that I’d love to play Rayman and Uncharted, they look brilliant, and so does Little Big Planet. I suppose its probably going to take a year or 18 months for the ball to be properly rolling, like the psp.

    • There’s loads of games for it.

    • I was looking at the range of games adorning the shelves for it the other day in Gamestop and I found myself becoming very disillusioned.

The trouble is, the majority are shrunken versions of big brother’s games. There isn’t enough separation between the two consoles (imo) and I found myself wandering over to the 3DS stand where not only is the device half price, there’s 3 or 4 times as many games and nearly all are especially created for it, exclusive to that system.

Vita, beautiful and powerful as it is, just isn’t pulling me in and I don’t know if even a price cut will alter that.

  3. It’s not that expensive, is it? The games and memory cards could do with a cut, but the console itself is reasonably priced in my opinion. Needs some great bundles for Christmas though.

  4. I really don’t get the point in announcements like this. When they do eventually let slip the new lower price ranges everyone will sigh and say “Well that’s still more than Shopto or Amazon have been charging for the console for the last six months”.
They do the same with PS3’s and any price cut that they announce is utterly pointless as it still costs more than anyone was paying before any price cut…..so in reality the retailers don’t really have to do anything with their already lower prices!
    *Rolls eyes*

    • Shopto and Amazon were used as examples but shopping around will get the same results.

  5. The guy’s name is Gara? :)
I enjoy my Vita, really, and so far I can’t quite complain in terms of games, both quantity and variety. Maybe because I’ve also have a PS3, I can see that if the Vita is your only gaming device then some more games would be ace.

  6. Ah, sales guys. A world of bullshit and sales speak. For example:

“we’ve got great software now as we face into peak.”

Seriously… what the hell? The English language. When you’re bored of the most widely used language in the world and all of it’s 600,000+ words that like to be used so as to inform and engage…. make shit up!
