“Banned” Carmageddon Launches On iOS, Is Free For One Day

The iOS remake of the BANNED! car racing dice-em-up Carmageddon has launched today, and with a very limited free period as, say the makers, a “thank you” to their Kickstarter Backers.

“Carmageddon features real-world environments that have been turned into killing fields,” says the blurb, “where the locals stay out on the streets at their peril.”

“As well as using your car as a weapon, every level is sprinkled generously with power-ups that have a vast variety of mad effects, adding a whole extra level of craziness to the proceedings.”

A quick playtest suggests a faithful recreation, but perhaps one that hasn’t aged terribly well. You can see for yourself by grabbing it for free (albeit in the presence of a 69p car pack) from here.

  1. A cross between GTA & hot wheels lol, I will try it. Never really bought a game on my iPhone, I have one game fruit ninja

  2. Looking at it for iOS I think I’ll hate the controls instantly. Will wait for the proper HD version to release (now with added buttons!). :-)

    • Agreed!

    • Just pair up a bluetooth keyboard or use a usb one with a cheap knock off adapter on ebay.

And wheres my mention dagnabit!! Theres a finders fee for news related articles which equates to the cost of one chocolate hobnob I’ll have you know!

  3. ’27 Cunning Stuntworthy Achievements’……..Really!!!!

  4. this is why i cant take tablet/phone gaming seriously, 1997 was a long time ago, lets leave it that way. Shiny new hardware, shit old games, sigh…

    • You do know you can buy new games on phones and tablets, right? ;)

      • yeah, unfortunately the majority are on par or below the standard of Carmageddon

      • Nonsense.

      • I’m with nofi on this one. Sure, there’s a lot more noise on the likes of iTunes but that’s because it’s so cheap to develop. However, it also means we get introduced to little gems that simply might not have existed elsewhere.

      • I was playing Bastion on my iPad only yesterday.

A very good recreation of it, although I’m not sure I’ll be able to control it well enough when it actually gets difficult.

  5. Was going to post this in the forums. I don’t often go on the App Store but I came across this randomly.

  6. Its on Gog or something, might check it out to see what the fuss is about Carmageddon and why its so legendary.

It’ll probably.. be hell on my Ipod touch, I’ll try anyway.

  7. I suppose how well its aged depends on what youre expecting from the game, to me it looks and plays just like it did back in the 90’s which is perfect. The touch controls are fine, the only pet down is that on my 3gs its a heavy battery rinser!

  8. LOL is this the future of technology, using cutting edge tech to play games that really weren’t all that cop when they originally came out? Carmageddon got coverage for its need to be censored rather than for its ‘gameplay’. Aged terribly but that’s not the main gripe…the lack of actual buttons and the fact that touch controls are utter shite, that should be the main focus…

  9. if my quick go at EGX is any indication, the only problem is with it being touch screen controls, i’d imagine they work better on the bigger Ipad screen.

but for free i’ll learn to adapt. ^_^

i hope it has the lightning car, that thing was awesome, you don’t even have to hit the peds as the car would shoot lightning at any that were nearby as you drive past them.
i actually finished a few levels by killing every ped with that car. ^_^

i used to really like Carmageddon, it’ll be good to play it again.
i have the PS1 version, but while it’s ok graphically, for a PS1 game, the physics just don’t work that well.

i’d love to see the proper sequel version on consoles, but if it’ll run on my pc, i’ll get the pc version

    • now if only somebody could resurrect Dungeon Keeper.

  10. I’ve been playing the game today, and while I’m no friend of touchscreen buttons, it’s actually pretty good fun IMO. The cars all handled like crap originally anyway, so I’ve always felt like I’m fighting the car rather than the controls, and it certainly plays well enough, I’ve managed to trash all the other cars in the races I’ve had so far. Worth a try for free.
