HMV Ireland Will Not Be Resuming Business

300 jobs lost.

Deloitte, HMV’s administrator, has confirmed that the Irish branch of the entertainment retailer will not be reopening, as a buyer has not been found for the sixteen stores in the country.

The Republic of Ireland stores were closed when HMV announced it was in administration, and have remained closed since that day. Around 300 staff members will lose their jobs as a result of the closures. Deloitte had said that the Irish branches were not making profit, which would have put off any buyers.

The news follows last week’s announcement of 66 stores being closed in the UK, as well as job losses at HMV’s head office including the company’s CEO Trevor Moore.

The news may not be too surprising to some because of how HMV has struggled recently. Deloitte will be doing everything in their power to salvage an operational business from the collapse of the entertainment retailer, which has the unfortunate effect of these closures of the Irish business.

Our thoughts go out to all of those affected.

Just Smyths and Gamestop left. Already noticed Gamestop’s prices going up. Soon I’ll be buying online exclusively.

Hope those affected are able to find other jobs very quickly.

It’s a real shame that the Irish stores couldn’t be saved too. Apart from games, HMV was pretty much the place to go if you were looking for cd or dvds/blurays so now our retail choices are truly decimated especially for music and movies.
I did hear someone say today that the Dublin and Cork stores might be re-opened by somebody else so hopefully that rumour has some substance, we’ll have to wait and see.

Seeing as they were carrying everything out of HMV Cork in boxes yesterday when I walked by I wouldn’t hold too much hope I’m afraid.
