Pokémon Heading to Wii U

Don’t get too excited about that title. There isn’t a main instalment in the excellent Pokémon franchise on its way to Nintendo’s latest home console – instead, Nintendo are releasing a new entry into the Pokémon Rumble series which was, according to Serebii.net, announced in the latest Japanese CoroCoro magazine.

The game is set for release in Japan some time this Spring and it’s going to be a download only title, rather than a full-blown retail game. It will contain all 649 current Pokémon, with up to four players and featuring up to 100 Pokémon at a time.

The last entry in the Pokémon Rumble series – dubbed Super Pokémon Rumble – released on 3DS towards of the end of 2011 but wasn’t a very good game, soon becoming extremely repetitive while remaining very shallow. The idea was good, however – toy versions of Pokémon with real-time battling was a nice departure from the gameplay of the main series.

Hopefully they’ll utilise the GamePad quite well and develop on the previous versions to make a game that does the Pokémon series justice, as a precursor to a fully-fledged Pokémon Wii U game. There’s still no confirmation on whether this will be released in the US or Europe, but there’s a good chance given it’s a downloadable game.

[drop2]Elsewhere in Pokémon news, a new Pokémon has been announced to be included in the upcoming 3DS games X and Y. Minor spoilers, obviously – so try not to read ahead (or look across) if you want to go into the game completely fresh.

The new Pokémon was also announced in CoroCoro and is named Ninfia. It appears to be a brand-new evolution of Eevee, though its elemental type and evolution process are yet to be revealed. It’s the first Eeveelution since Diamond and Pearl, so it should be interesting.

I reckon it’s a flying type.

  1. Is today disappointing story day in the newsroom?

    • If you aren’t interested in the story why bother commenting?

      • Disappointed =/= not interested

      • I was interested in the headline, disappointed to discover it was a ‘Rumble’ title, and equally disappointed with today’s other stories with Last Of Us being delayed and Colonial Marines being rubbish!

  2. I might be inclined to purchase a Wii U if they had a full Pokémon game, backpack on the controller, then in battles it can be the moves or Pokéballs. Visuals would be 3rd person or something, which would be better. I know I’m not the only one that wants that, by any means, just don’t see why they’ve not made a home console version yet, particularly with the new handheld games going slightly more 3D graphics wise. It would sell like mental wouldn’t it…

As for this? Just gauging the user base for a home console? Or just another tie in? I’m not nearly as interested to be honest.

    • It’s a tie-in but X and Y is coming to 3DS now – maybe Super Pokémon Rumble was a precursor to gauge the fan base?

    • I’ve still to understand why that kind of game hasn’t been a reality, unless Nintendo/Game Freak think that it’ll devalue or diminish the view of the handheld titles if the home console was home to the best version of the game.
