Vita Sells 62,500 In Japan

Sony’s improved PS Vita sales have been confirmed by this week’s Media Create figures and are even better than expected. The Vita achieved sales of 62,500 units, almost six times higher than figures from two weeks ago.

For the second week in a row the struggling Wii U was outsold by the handheld, and was in fact outsold by the older PSP, which was buoyed by the release of Sega’s Shining Ark.

Whilst the Vita still didn’t reach the heights of the 3DS’s 77,439 sales, these figures are clearly much closer to where Sony want and need them to be.  It seems, much like the 3DS, that the majority of gamers are only willing to part with their money when the console price and the correct software catalogue align.

Two Vita titles also made it into the Japanese software top ten, the difficult to pronounce Senran Kagura Shinovi Versus: Otome Shoujotachi no Shoumei, and Phantasy Star Online 2: Special Package, the paid version of the freemium title.

The full list of sales are as follows:

  1. 3DS – 77.439 (74.729)
  2. Vita – 62.543 (11.456)
  3. PS3 – 25.725 (18.529)
  4. PSP – 11.171 (8.981)
  5. Wii U – 10.021 (9.633)
  6. Wii – 1.383 (1.317)
  7. Xbox 360 – 486 (473)

  1. Last i heard (and this was only week or so ago) Sony have yet to actually sign a deal for Vita Bioshock, WTF is going on there?.

  2. Hopefully these sales will convince developers there is still life in the handheld, but I can’t see many western developers supporting it without mirrored sales over here.

  3. Wow, if PSO2 manages to make the top 10 with a paid version, I wonder how many downloads the free version got.
