Vita Sells 62,500 In Japan

Sony’s improved PS Vita sales have been confirmed by this week’s Media Create figures and are even better than expected. The Vita achieved sales of 62,500 units, almost six times higher than figures from two weeks ago.

For the second week in a row the struggling Wii U was outsold by the handheld, and was in fact outsold by the older PSP, which was buoyed by the release of Sega’s Shining Ark.

Whilst the Vita still didn’t reach the heights of the 3DS’s 77,439 sales, these figures are clearly much closer to where Sony want and need them to be.  It seems, much like the 3DS, that the majority of gamers are only willing to part with their money when the console price and the correct software catalogue align.

Two Vita titles also made it into the Japanese software top ten, the difficult to pronounce Senran Kagura Shinovi Versus: Otome Shoujotachi no Shoumei, and Phantasy Star Online 2: Special Package, the paid version of the freemium title.

The full list of sales are as follows:

  1. 3DS – 77.439 (74.729)
  2. Vita – 62.543 (11.456)
  3. PS3 – 25.725 (18.529)
  4. PSP – 11.171 (8.981)
  5. Wii U – 10.021 (9.633)
  6. Wii – 1.383 (1.317)
  7. Xbox 360 – 486 (473)

And the full list of software sales are below:

  1. Dynasty Warriors 8 (PS3, Koei Tecmo) – 203.224 / New
  2. Professor Layton and the Legacy of Civilization A (3DS, Level 5) – 130.686 / New
  3. Senran Kagura Shinovi Versus: Otome Shoujotachi no Shoumei (Vita, Marvelous AQL) – 94.324 / New
  4. Dragon Ball Heroes: Ultimate Mission (3DS, Bandai Namco) – 88.386 / New

  1. Well done Vita. Fingers crossed this is the norm rather than an anomaly. Should kick into an even higher gear when Soul Sacrifice comes out!

    • Soul Sacrifice, Killzone, Tearaway…

And i still have hope for Bioshock.

      • Killzone won’t make a dent in Japan, mind.

      • Think Bioshock may end up vapourware but hoping to be proved wrong. Killzone does look good though. Not heard of Tearaway though (unless its the LBP type thing i’m thinking of).

      • Tearaway is the new Media Moecule game, looks nice. There is also Phantasy Star Online 2 which I hope comes over to the west but *grr* the pc one lacks any news.

  2. Must have had a deal on ;)

  3. handhelds continue to dominate consoles in Japan heh.

  4. Good to see sales have improved.

  5. My girlfriend walked in on me trying to pronounce ‘Senran Kagura Shinovi Versus: Otome Shoujotachi no Shoumei’ out load. She laughed.

    • The name just keeps on going, it’s like there’s three or four places it would have ended had it been western. I really want to play it now though, out of curiosity, perhaps that’s why it’s sold so well.

    • It looks pretty damn good! I saw it on the sales chart and thought I can’t say that or spell it!

      • If it’s released in the west it will probably be titled Senran Kagura: Boobs Galore :P

      • @3:44 in that video LOL

      • My girlfriend walked in on me watching the video to SKSV:OSNS. She did not laugh.

    • Read your comment and now I laughed too.

    • I want to import it….

  6. You’d think everyone in Japan had a PSP by now. A fantastic performance by the Vita, let’s hope it can stay on that side of 50 000 for a while.

    • Yeah that’s what I thought. 7 years of constant sales, I mean, how many gamers are there in Japan.

    • The amount they play on them I wouldn’t be surprised if each PSP owner is on their third or fourth by now! Great figures for the Vita. Mr Sony, methinks you might see a similar trend in the west, fancy giving us a discount?

    • Well I had my PSP 2000 for 4 years and played the hell out of it. It was still working when I sold it *cough* mostly. Well all features were intact, but the screen was just getting old.

      • My screens gone a bit dickey too, it’s like a slightly less vivid picture is creeping in from the edges. Still works too though! Well, it works as well as it can with that wanky cramp and arthritis enducing nub of pain. All I have to say is GameCube c-button, should’ve copied that.

  7. Vita with Thrillzone Bundle then I’m in :-)

  8. I wonder if Japan is a testing ground for Sony to examine the results. Surely with these kind of figures it might make sense to do a price drop here, even if its around summer time when E3 has hopefully established an even more illustrious library as well as PS4 remote play support too.

  9. Trying to sell my Vita off before a price drop or a hardware refresh…these numbers might encourage an EU price drop…

  10. I’m not a fanboy but those 360 sales are hilarious hahahahahaha.
