Timesplitters Rewind is a fan made project that got the go-ahead from Crytek via an informal chat on the Facebook page of the group of fans who set up the “100,000 Strong for Timesplitters 4” petition.
Although permitted to make use of the assets and characters from the much loved series, Rewind’s creators will rebuild everything from the ground up in CryEngine 3. That means that this won’t be a mod for any existing game, it’ll be its own standalone game – and they aim to distribute it freely.
In an interview with cookingwithgrenades.com, the project’s manager, Michael Hubicka, spoke about the work undertaken on the project so far and what they hope to achieve.
It’s early days for the project just yet – they hope to have a demo ready by December of this year – but the ambition on show is matched only by their willingness to share their process with other fans, taking feedback and suggestions along the way.
The aim is to include as much of the content from previous games that fans most loved while also allowing the use of the same map editors (available alongside the demo) that the team is using – thanks to the flexibility and power of CryEngine 3.
They’re aiming for a multiplayer-focussed experience but also trying to recreate the storylines that featured in the first three Timesplitters games – although that’s very much subject to permissions from Crytek. The group, as you’d expect, really know what they’re doing with regards to the feature set and feel of the game and the full interview makes for a very interesting read.
We know that a number of our own community is quite keen on the idea of a new Timesplitters game so offering your support to these guys is surely a positive way to show Crytek how much you care and also perhaps help in getting you a Timesplitters game to play in the future.

The Timesplitters franchise is what originally got me into first person shooters. With that said, I’m unsure how a new instalment would fare.
In TS2 I remember attempting to unlock all of the characters which not only required a hard play through the game’s campaign but also a gold rating on all arcade-style missions and those insane challenges. Between a friend and I, we managed to pad out the entire roster using our combined saved data.

Brilliant, i don’t think TimeSplitters will return in any official capacity again, so this is great.

If this does well, I can easily see it potentially leading to a Timesplitters 4.

Great news…
Between TS2 & DOOM, as my favourite fps thus far.

IF this game turns out nicely, Crytek may have a new dev team working for them =)

I signed the original petition, and I’m so glad that this is going ahead. Being fan made it should be dripping in fan service, which should be great. This will be awesome, TimeSplitters is easily one of my favourite franchises of all time.

I guess this is PC only. A bit sad for a Playstation classic.

Unless Crytek were to pitch in, or maybe they could setup a Kickstarter (or similar) to raise funds.

I’ve been longing to brick some windows for ages! I hope this game will still have those ridiculous missions!

I think I platinumed all but 4 challenges on Timesplitters 2. My friends and I spent months holed up trying to beat each other and beat the game in pass the pad ‘mode’.
Probably the greatest multiplayer fun i’ve had to date. Either that or Killzone 2 and anyone who knows anything about me knows Killzone 2 was epic for me.
